Question about the "Enhanced" Live View: Why is the "AF-ON button enables AF in Live View Mode" not implemented in the 1DMkIII or even on the upcoming 1DsMkIII (based also on the Amazon specs). It's the same simple implementation anyway (just temporarily lower the reflex mirror while AFing), I wonder why Canon didn't think of it earlier. Also this Live View feature seems to be new also:

A new electronic 1st-curtain shutter function in Live View mode reduces release time lag and operational noise even further to avoid spooking wildlife or disturbing people nearby with unwanted camera sounds. Additionally, as the release time lag is miniscule, even instantaneous movements like a bird taking flight can be readily captured.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this also wasn't implemented in the 1DMkIII Live View IIRC? So the 40D gets two new useful Live View "enhancements" over the flagship 1dMkIII, kewlie.

It appears that Canon has been listening to consumers this time around and have designed a camera that according to the specs should satisfy most everyone. This could possibly be the ultimate wildlife camera! I was noticing that Canon has a new grip designed for this camera but also like the fact that existing 20D/30D users can continue to use their grips that they currently own according to the detail specs at the Amazon link. I expect the new design has seals for the battery door and between the camera and grip. I think it may be time to give the 20D to my wife for good and add something new to my kit!

Have you noticed that the price is gone from the Amazon web listing?

I let you know when I get mine... I guess I will risk any potential problems like that... given I'm currently shooting with a 300D, I'm pretty confident it will focus better then what I've got now...

Worse yet, now when you search for the 40D at Amazon.com, you can't even click through to the more detailed description, etc... it seems as if amazon is trying to clean up their early release of info...

But... many of us have already saved complete HTML for the pages...

I really don't think they will honor that, but I hope they do

Hmm...I was set on upgrading to a 5D later this year, but now I may have to wait and see.

These high-level features are very exciting. While I'm sure it has a lot to do with fighting back to Nikon, part of me thinks that Canon has some new, breakthrough features in the works, so they aren't worried about reserving these features for their top models anymore. Once the new features come out, their top models will once again be significantly separated from the X0D's.

I hope they've toned down the shutter racket to match the nice quiet 400D.

The Silent Mode operation from the 1D3 made it into the 40D, so you can delay the mirror return slap by not immediately releasing the shutter release.

its now gone from the amazon site.

wow, that was quick - either a fake or a big mistake on Amazon's part.

someone with a better memory than mine, was the high precision center focus point still an f/2.8 or better?

and the other cross points - they were just 'standard' cross points, right? Is that a significant improvement? On the 20D I only use the center point anyway.

whoops OK I found it again. Seems the original link in this thread is not working anymore. I also can't search on their site for 40D.

and this in the expanded specs

Silent mode Live View shoot: Mode 1: First shutter curtain remains open; shooting up to 6.5 fps possible; Mode 2: Quieter option; 2nd shutter curtain doesn't close until user's finger is taken off shutter button

The links to the 40D and 1Ds MK III are working for me. They are no longer available for pre-order.

Oh you are right, I get it to work right now. Ten minutes ago the link in the second post of the thread would give me a 404. Thanks.

But the 1DsmkIII and 1DmkIII are new models that were (or will be) released in 2007. If Canon stays true to their history, neither professional model will see a real upgrade again until the year 2010. I doubt that Canon is holding back on any new technology for future models.

I think it's incredible that Canon decided to implement so many professional features into a prosumer model. The 10 MP sensor, 3" LCD, and dust reduction were a given. Bigger viewfinder, sRAW, and wireless were a mild surprise.

But weather sealing? 14-bit RAW? 6.5 fps? Dual high precision center AF point? All other AF points became cross type? Interchangeable focus screens? If someone told me last week that the EOS 40D would have all these things, I would've dismissed it as a fanboy's wishful thinking.

If someone would like to see the specs, you can find them here as well:

The 40D seems amazing. It would look great next to my 5D! If only I had some spare cash

I can think of some features they weren't able to include in the 40D: AF micro-adjustment, built-in wireless, built-in AF assist light (w/o using the pop-up flash), dedicated/programmable MLU button, native ISO3200 or extended IS06400... =P

Here's a currently working Amazon direct link:
