I recently got the 17-40L and am using it with a Rebel XTI. I also have the EW-83D II hood that's been recommended for this lens when using it on crop sensor cameras. The fit is super tight - I can barely get it on and off. Anyone else have experience with this? Is there another Canon hood that will work better?

Thanks,

Kyle

It'll loosen up with use. OTOH, it's designed for use on a full frame camera, so you can use a narrower AOV hood on a 1.6x CF body. I use the 24/1.4L EW-83DII hood on my 17-40L with 20D and 30D bodies, which have the same CF as your XTi. My problem now is to remember to swap hoods when I put it on my new 5D.

A touch or two of fine sandpaper will ease in the placement/removal process.

Thanks. I guess I'll try sanding it a little. It's so tight-fitting compared to the hood that came with the lens.

I see that some are recommending the EW-83J (made for the 17-55 F2.8 IS) as a better choice for 1.6 bodies. Maybe better to return it and get this one instead.

The hood for the 24-105L, EW-83H, works just fine on the 17-40 with a 1.6 crop camera. I used it all the time on my 30D for both the 17-40 and the 24-105 (also made for one less hood to carry around). Besides, that petal hood is a PITA to pack.

Second the recommendation for the hood that comes with the 24-105L i use the same one on both.

I have the EW-83DII for use with my 17-40. It was a tight fit at first -- not super tight, but tighter than most hoods. It started to loosen up a bit after probably 10-12 times of putting it on and removing it. Now, it fits nicely.

Why do you need to have a loose fit?

My 17-40 hood was a bit too loose so I taped it in place. Never comes off the lens.

I used to use the hood from my 24-105 on my 17-40 with a crop sensor camera. It was a bit tight at first, but eventually it loosened up a bit. Worked fine.

The hood from the 17-55 IS works nice on the 17-40L. It looks cooler too

I use the 24/1.4L EW-83DII hood on my 17-40L with D30, 300D and 30D bodies....the hood is a bit tight....but works very well

I have the EW-83D hood and recently noticed excessive wear around the front of my lens. This is caused by the tight fit were the hood bayonets to the lens. I now keep the hood in the shooting position to avoid further wear. It is especially hard to mount in the reverse position.

I use the EW-83J. Perfect fit (better than original in fact). No vignetting.
