Here we go again. It would be great if it were true, but it's still a rumor. I wouldn't bet money on it.

I'm guessing (hope) it will have 11 or 12 megapixels, 3" display, better AF, better allround ISO performance, and 6/6.5 fps, and liveview for those who need it.

Dpreview huh ?
OK. If I take your word for it, at best he's lucky. At worst, he works for Canon. If he works for Canon you can bet your bippy he's under a non-disclosure clause and is risking his job to disseminate info prior to a release.

f/2.8? Yeah right. It would weight 20 pounds. Try a 5.6.

Not sure if it's "clearance" priced or not, but I certainly liked the $1009 I paid for my backup 30D last week at Sigma4Less. Boo-yah.

All I can say is that you do not need rumours to know the basics of what will be in the new release. Canon brought out sensor cleaning on the XTI. Their 1DIII has it and so will every model after that. A 10 MP sensor will be a likely progression from 8.2. It is also likely that it will have a Digic III.

Canon has been pretty good with consistency once they release an upgrade. Yes, there are likely to be more but that is what the wait time is for. Each model put out is going to be some improvement otherwise it will not be a new model. Canon has been pretty consistent with it's releases as well. 18 months for the consumer market and 3 years for the Pro.

I think in the USA about 6 months ago they were around $1150 or so... The 30D's have definitely been dropping in price, but I don't know that I've seen any large drops all at one time yet... Nor do I really expect it to happen... The price may go a bit lower I think after the replacement gets officially announced... but then it's probably not likely to go much bellow $950 anytime soon...

I do know that depending on the reality of the specs of the replacement... I may end up buying a 30D after the replacement is announced...

Yeah, the 10mp is pretty much a given. They had 3 bodies (2 prosumer, 1 consumer) with the 6mp, 3 (same) with the 8, and now the XTI has the 10mp already...

I just got off the phone with the service center in Mexico City. Service center is run by a local dealer from who I ordered a 1D Mark III. Just for the heck of it I asked the owner about the 40D. He told me that they haven't received any information on it yet. They usually get at least a two week lead before anything is announced.

So I don't believe anything will happen in the next two weeks, but you'll never know.

Yep Brit-007, that sounds about right. If you don't like the 30D the 40D won't flip your switch. But a nice camera all the same.

BTW 007 what really happened to Princess Di?

That guy doesn't exist.

As mentioned he does exist, and I think he posted here under the same or similar handle here. If you were paying attention, he HAS hit the last 3 major releases right on the money- I remember ridiculing him about canon releasing a new 16-35, but obviously it was I who was ignorant. Of course, since you don't read, post, or lend credence to any of these threads you wouldn't be aware of that. Oh, wait a minute.....

Anyway, it would make sense that early knowledge of a replacement camera would hit the channel. The specs or any detailed information wouldn't be present, but the fact that the 30D is no longer in production would be known at least indirectly.

Doubtful, Canon has invested far too much money to let the entire EF-S lineup rest on the XTi.

I don't lend credence to rumors like this, lucky guess or not. They're wrong over and over again. But, like I said, keep guessing long enough and somebody will be right sooner or later. It's only a matter of time.
Good luck.

My 1D4 with the full frame at the size of EOS 3 is so awesome - 22 FPS at RAW, and cross-type focus points throughout the entire frame! the entire back is now dedicated to the LCD live view and the wheel is on the front side of the camera.

Maybe it is just me, but I only find threads like these exercises in Rumor Theory Discourse 101; why are we all grinding gears over a dSLR that will be to the 30D like the 30D is to the 20D. That seems pretty darn predictable. For something like the MKIII, I could understand...but the 40D?

A larger viewfinder, plus the newer stuff the XTi has, added in the same shell with even just a small boost in speed and processing power seems like the most they could get out of it and come out with a really healthy profit margin, unless they wanted to make a revolutionary jump.

I find it rather difficult to get excited about anything new from Canon lately. They apparently just throw stuff out on the market that doesn't work right. They don't say anything and don't fix anything and just expect people to buy it.(50L, 1D3) I hate to say it, but I guess for the most part people don't disappoint them.

Fair enough - I agree that what we have seen so far is educated speculation at best. However, lots of people make tons of money based on educated speculation - not that anyone other than canon will make money on the 40D. My point is that intuition and observation are actually fairly reliable when based on historical reality. Another way to put it is that history repeats itself, and with every generation of xxd and rebel they have had the same sensor size but the AF and ISO performance of the xxd have been better. Right now the XTi has a larger sensor and the same AF of the 30D. Also historically, the non-pro DSLR's are on an 18 month cycle (as everyone knows by now) and august is the 18 month anniversary of the 30D.

So, the speculation that a 30D replacement will come out in late july or early august is more than reasonable. However, the expectation that it will be weathersealed or have an APS-H size sensor is wishful thinking.
