I've been reading about Canon being beaten around the bush by Nikon for ages, for every market segment, every time Nikon brought out a new camera. Makes me wonder how come Canon is still the #1 dSLR manufacturer... by a long shot.

Indeed.

Like the shop owner with a direct line to Canon, internet gossip by and for the uninformed.

At least one suggestion of... older camera users just buying a 5D or used 1D.... Sorry but that doesn't work well for me... At this point I like 1.6X crop, although I have just one lens that requires it... I do not want a 1D and/or the big honking body that goes with it, or the old NiMH batteries that go with them... Full frame 5D at it's price has no real appeal to me either... In general, I'd rather buy a brand new camera and the warranty that comes with it...

So,.. My 300D is getting old, and could die at any minute... 30D is OK, but I really would rather buy the latest technology, with the assumption that it is better and that this new technology is going to hold up reasonably well over the next year or two... My next camera purchase would likely be my last for several years... I will likely keep it until it's of little or no value for re-sale (as my 300D is now). I don't really need two bodies very badly so I probably will not buy a new camera in the future as backup to my next camera purchase, etc...

That means... obviously I'm hopping for the for the best in a 30D replacement and I hope it comes soon... What I'd like is... improved AF, including micro adjustment if at all possible... Faster write speed to memory card would be great... I basically would prefer that it remain CF cards, but could live with going to SD, as memory cards are basically cheap enough to switch if I have to... more or less any other improvements would be icing on the cake for me.

Ideally I'd like to see it sell on day one for under $1300.

I have not inside info... but if the 30D replacement is not announced by early August I would be surprised.

Cumon 18-200 IS

I heard from "somebody who knows" (a guy on Craig's List who's brother-in-law plays golf with a guy who's son works at Canon New Zealand's printer division) that Canon is going to announce a 18-200/2.8 IS in November. They're also releasing a 200/2.0 IS which will have a built-on hood and will have Canon's new purple stripe instead of red (purple is going to be used for all IS lenses from now on).

Where is the guy that correctly announced the 1DMIII a few days before the official announcement in the spring? If I remember correctly he also announced another Canon camera correctly a few days before it was announced... I can't remember if that was the Xti, or the 5D... but that guy had pretty clearly had inside info and gave it out a few days prior to the actual Canon press releases...

I forget that guys handle...

Yes he does. His screen name is tsiphoto at dpreview. He has been correct on the specs and timing of the last 3 body releases. He hasn't posted anything on the 40D since last PMA when he said "Sorry no 40D at PMA".

Multiple Internet sources that cite the same rumor does not necessarily add validity to the rumor. The same person might've been starting the same rumor for all we know.

Here we go again. It would be great if it were true, but it's still a rumor. I wouldn't bet money on it.

I'm guessing (hope) it will have 11 or 12 megapixels, 3" display, better AF, better allround ISO performance, and 6/6.5 fps, and liveview for those who need it.

Dpreview huh ?
OK. If I take your word for it, at best he's lucky. At worst, he works for Canon. If he works for Canon you can bet your bippy he's under a non-disclosure clause and is risking his job to disseminate info prior to a release.

f/2.8? Yeah right. It would weight 20 pounds. Try a 5.6.

Not sure if it's "clearance" priced or not, but I certainly liked the $1009 I paid for my backup 30D last week at Sigma4Less. Boo-yah.

All I can say is that you do not need rumours to know the basics of what will be in the new release. Canon brought out sensor cleaning on the XTI. Their 1DIII has it and so will every model after that. A 10 MP sensor will be a likely progression from 8.2. It is also likely that it will have a Digic III.

Canon has been pretty good with consistency once they release an upgrade. Yes, there are likely to be more but that is what the wait time is for. Each model put out is going to be some improvement otherwise it will not be a new model. Canon has been pretty consistent with it's releases as well. 18 months for the consumer market and 3 years for the Pro.

I think in the USA about 6 months ago they were around $1150 or so... The 30D's have definitely been dropping in price, but I don't know that I've seen any large drops all at one time yet... Nor do I really expect it to happen... The price may go a bit lower I think after the replacement gets officially announced... but then it's probably not likely to go much bellow $950 anytime soon...

I do know that depending on the reality of the specs of the replacement... I may end up buying a 30D after the replacement is announced...

Yeah, the 10mp is pretty much a given. They had 3 bodies (2 prosumer, 1 consumer) with the 6mp, 3 (same) with the 8, and now the XTI has the 10mp already...

I just got off the phone with the service center in Mexico City. Service center is run by a local dealer from who I ordered a 1D Mark III. Just for the heck of it I asked the owner about the 40D. He told me that they haven't received any information on it yet. They usually get at least a two week lead before anything is announced.

So I don't believe anything will happen in the next two weeks, but you'll never know.

Yep Brit-007, that sounds about right. If you don't like the 30D the 40D won't flip your switch. But a nice camera all the same.

BTW 007 what really happened to Princess Di?

As mentioned he does exist, and I think he posted here under the same or similar handle here. If you were paying attention, he HAS hit the last 3 major releases right on the money- I remember ridiculing him about canon releasing a new 16-35, but obviously it was I who was ignorant. Of course, since you don't read, post, or lend credence to any of these threads you wouldn't be aware of that. Oh, wait a minute.....

Anyway, it would make sense that early knowledge of a replacement camera would hit the channel. The specs or any detailed information wouldn't be present, but the fact that the 30D is no longer in production would be known at least indirectly.

Doubtful, Canon has invested far too much money to let the entire EF-S lineup rest on the XTi.

I don't lend credence to rumors like this, lucky guess or not. They're wrong over and over again. But, like I said, keep guessing long enough and somebody will be right sooner or later. It's only a matter of time.
Good luck.
