D700 with 50mm G, not happy with the sharpness in the corners, but I still like this picture.

no issue with corner sharpness with pics like this. i'd rather be worried about the halo's i see around the tree for instance. i think you overcooked the shadow/higlight recovery a tad there. probably a lightroom or acr conversion am i right?
the picture is interesting. i had to look twice to see what your subject is. cool idea, i think it would also work in B/W

how can you complain about corner sharpness at f/2?

As far as I can remeber I haven't done to much with the highlights, I have darkened the blues a bit, mut not to much.. Have also added a bit of clarity, which may help explain the halo-effect.
All adjustements were done i ACR, just a bit of sharpening and resizing in CS4.

I know I can't complain about corner sharpness at f/2, but it does not look like lack of sharpness, more like motion blur, a little strange...

EDIT: I just looked at the settings in ACR, and I did actually do a little highlight recovery, but when I turned all the "modifications" off, the halo-effect was still clearly visible..

How about some shots similar to this with the D700 and 70-300 VR? I'll be using the 35 F2D, 24-70 and 70-300VR when I get my D700 next month.

impossible, this is already a crop, you need a 500mm F4 on your D700
There's a lot of geese in the neighborhood i will have a shot at it soon. I don't expect a big difference since this was shot @ iso200. Both camera's look pretty the same (color/contrast wise) at that setting...

This was shot with a D700 and a sigma 70-200 @ 150mm F4.5 1/500 iso1100 (it was very windy hence the faster shutterspeed)

Here are a few from a roasting hot day in Kew Gardens last week. I eventually had to escape the green houses and go for a lay down in the shade to recuperate.
