Does anyone have any idea (or a good guess based on past history) when pre-ordering will be available at the main online stores such as B&H and Amazon?

I agree with David ...I've never liked the way the P-Fn.s had to be set. Nevertheless, I'm absolutely LOVING the ability to have ISO displayed in the viewfinder along with remaining shots simultaneously, and of course remaining battery power

so what kind of image quality difference will we see with 14bit?

There's nothing to hate, and everything to love about this camera.

I'll say it again (since it'll be the first time in this thread ): Canon really LISTENED to photographers and IMPLEMENTED the changes that were requested.

Nice feature set, but it's still BIG and HEAVY. Oh well, I didn't really need the temptation...

EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR will be similar to that of its predecessor, the EOS-1D Mark II N Digital SLR

No worries, the 5D does just fine in Alaska If you're primarily interested in critter photography, well, the 1D3's crop factor and FPS would be nice. For landscapes the 1D3's 14 bits would be nice but at the cost of some of the 5D's resolution. Otherwise, the 5D is still a great all around camera.

The 1D3 introduces a bunch of very nice features that bode very, very well for the 1Ds3 or whatever it's gonna be called. Think I'll start saving my pennies in anticipation

Is it just me, or does the mp3 of the camera shooting at 10 fps sound oddly familiar?

- the trouble is, this is the year before the Olympics. The first umpteen hundred 1d3's off the assembly line will be earmarked for the world's press and the wire agencies. As a non-internationally-acclaimed sports photographer, I'll dutifully get into line with all my brethren and gaze enviously at Donald Miralle et al several hundreds places further up towards the front of the queue, smiling and joking with Canon executives while the rest of us shiver in the rain and try to keep our money dry.

By the time I get to the front of the queue, the 1d3 will be sold out. I'll trudge home and ring around the usual suspects, hearing rumours of bizarre little side-street camera outlets which have mysteriously taken delivery of one of these beasts. Several hundred pounds in fuel, parking tickets and fast food receipts later, I will throw myself to the floor sobbing in defeat.

My frustration will come across in my work during the next few weeks, I'll be snappy with people to the point that I'll start losing friends and making both women and men of a nervous disposition cry. A conversation with me will feel much like the journey to Valhalla with 'I Hate Vikings' written on the giant sandwich board you're wearing....

Months later, standing up to my knees in salt water and getting sunburnt, bitten by various bugs and generally falling into a poor state of repair, I'll look at my 1d3 sat alluringly between my trusty gitzo monopod and 400 f2.8 and laugh slightly manically at the ridiculous lengths I went to to get this silly little expensive Japanese black box. Then I'll carry on taking some of the finest photos I've ever taken, and gladly look forward to doing it all again in another 18 months.

You're welcome, but notice that it is not actually the 1D3! (I wish... )

It's the EOS 1V with booster. Also the 1D3 will not have the 7fps. It will come with two continuous modes: 3fps and 10fps.
