Warning 1 - DO NOT go to 'shutter durability' if you are not planning on buying this camera.

Warning 2 - DO NOT look at ISO comparison if you are a Nikon user.

I was waiting to see what the next FF camera would be because I mainly do Architectural photography. I was not expecting a 1.3 10MP sensor. This camera is probably great for Sports and Wildlife photography. With what limited knowledge we have of it which would users want, this or the 5D?

Where'd you place your preorder Brutus? I don't see the camera yet on B&H.

is there a way to merge the other threads here so that discussion is not lost and has to be repeated here again?

I am going to call Calumet tomorrow to see how much the 1D3 ships for here in the UK. Just curious!

To be honest, though, I will let others see how well the camera performs in the real world, so the 'hands on' thread is going to be very interesting. On paper I agree, the 1D3 looks fantastic, but equally the 1D2N is the best camera I have ever owned and I simply cannot imagining dumping it to get a 1D3 at the moment. But don't quote me on that when you see one in my sig in April!

I have to admit the first hour after reading the 1D3 specs I was ready to run out for it.

Now that sanity has return, I still own one of the best cameras in the world and it takes great photos.

Eighteen months to 1D3N?

The MKIII, no contest. The improvements to the AF alone (with better sensors on the horizontal axis in addition to the vertical axis) make me want one. The better noise control (which looks like better overall noise performance and also extensive options for noise reduction in camera) is huge to me. The extra resolution is a bonus, but doesn't really matter much to me. The 5D really doesn't hold my interest at all.

Warning 1 - DO NOT go to 'shutter durability' if you are not planning on buying this camera.

I was very disappointed at this one myself... 300,000 frames... I'll burn through that at least twice before the 1 year warranty is up!

Yeah the problem with the 300 000 frames is that you burn off 6 frames each and every time you turn on and off the camera... So I am not sure if the 100 000 extra frames in reality will mean much.. I was ready to present my business case to my CFO (read wife), but I think I'll wait for at least one firmware upgrade before running to the bank..

BUT 14 Bit's..... Hmmm 4096 vs 16000 colors.... Ohh well.. Waiting for the crazy 1DsMKIII even if I will never be able to afford it..

this camera has a lot of great features, many of which are not related to IQ.

besides the lower noise, does anyone see any other IQ improvements in the sample images? nothing pops out at me. maybe the colors look better.

You must not have listened to the sound of the shutter.

The samples images look different to me than any previous camera. I think it's good different, but I need to see prints.

High ISO Sample Images

Their sample is misleading. Here's some math:

The sample's full frame is 156px on the short end. The white outlined area is 40px. So the cropped area is 25.6% of the frame.

The 1D3's sensor is 2592px on the short end. Cropping that to 25.6% of the frame, a full sample would be 665px on the short end.

The cropped area on their sample is 156px on the short end. 156 / 665 = .235.

Assuming the bottom image in their sample is the full frame of a picture taken with the 1D3, that sample is roughly a 23% crop. Much less than the 100% crops that would actually show noise grain. They essentially pixel-binned their results to get them to look like this.

Can't wait to see some REAL noise samples from the 1D3. Especially ISO6400.

Is anyone else here excited about the Live Preview mode? This will be perfect for tilt-shift and macro situations. From the Canon website, I read that the Live Preview mode will also have the option to show grids...which will make architecture shots easier.

I wonder if the future 40D will have Live Preview as well...or will this serve as the differentiator between the 1-series and everything else.

O yea, here is a link to a French website that had a hands-on preview of the 1dmk3...he shows off the 10 fps and the Live Preview mode:

I tend to agree here... perhaps they are not from RAW?

In one of the several Mk3 thread someone wondered how the 10 fps will sound...

Had some fun and recorded my 1V so one can get an idea of it.

In the .mp3 file you'll hear the following:

1) two single shots
2) low-speed continuous shooting @ 3 fps
3) high-speed continuous shooting @ 7 fps
4) super high-speed continuous shooting @ 10 fps

To listen to the shutter sound click here
