Hmmm, Birth of a New Brand, maybe, just maybe, this had/has something to do with it?

Canon to mass-produce flat panel TVs

Reuters Tuesday, October 3, 2006; 8:20 AM

CHIBA, Japan (Reuters) - Canon (7751.T) and Toshiba (6502.T) said on Tuesday they would start mass production of ultra-thin flat-panel TVs in early 2008, entering a market dominated by makers such as Matsushita Electric Industrial (6752.T) and Samsung Eletronics (005930.KS).

Canon Inc. and Toshiba Corp. are developing a new type of flat panels, which they say are thinner and consume less energy than the existing liquid crystal display (LCD) and plasma televisions.

The production of the new surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) TVs would start at the end of 2007, and expand into full-scale in 2008, Kazunori Fukuma, head of the venture set up by Canon and Toshiba, said at Japan's biggest electronics trade show, where he presented a 55-inch full high-definition TV for the first time.

Now this would definately be a Birth of a New Brand

I have heard that canon is coming out with some new Pro cameras this week. Anyone know anything about that?

Where have you heard that? The largest photography product convention of the year just ended 3 days ago and Canon announced 1 new entry DSLR and 7 new point and shoot cameras. It would make zero sense for Canon to announce a new pro camera a few days after this convention ended.

Just forget it and wait until early next year. Go out and shoot some nice photos of the fall leaves!

Dude, that's a little harsh. He's asking because he's asking, no need to get upset/defensive. Brand affinity is not like religion or anything. Can't we all just get along?

As for the question at hand, it would be REALLY odd for them to announce anything in the next few weeks. Even if they weren't going to have a real product before the end of the year they would have announced at photokina to steal some limelight - the 2 lenses and "imagetanks" they announced won't be released for a while. I guess it's possible the backlash is stronger than they thought, causing them to reverse an earlier decision not to announce before being ready.

wow - you all need to relax a little bit. sometimes things that get written on internet boards are done a little tongue-in-cheek.

Every week there is someone claiming Canon will be announcing new bodies that week If you want to buy a new camera but are afraid of something new coming out soon, then you will never buy that new toy.

Agreed, but I would hate to buy a new 1Ds2 only to find it replaced the next month. Making such an investment does, in my opinion, require some thought of where your purchase fits into the life cycle. If I was a P&S shooter, I wouldn't care less as I would know full well that it was likely to get replaced the following week, not even the following quarter!

I want a full frame body to pair with my 1D2N, part backup, partly for studio work which I am starting to do more of. After explaining this, even Canon CPS in the UK advised me to wait till the beginning of next year if I wasn't in urgent need of it. Makes sense to me, I only wish they had told me the reason why I should wait!

The new stuff ain't coming out till PMA, end of February; after that, who knows.

Canon's history is to announce about a week before events like PMA.

Hope that helps.

Heres my little story

I have been lusting after a 1D2 since they were announced. I waited and waited till they became more affordable.

I decided this summer might be time to get one. But of course everyone thought there would be a new pro body at Photokina, and many people in my position chose to wait. I saw a 4k actuation 1D2 for a nice price and jumped on it.

Just in the 2 months since I bought it, I have so many images that make me very happy... and if I had decided to wait, I would still be waiting indeed.

Just find what you want for a decent price, and go for it. Dont wait for the next best thing. You can buy it down the road anyways if you really need it.

I heard Canon is releasing a new camera next week. It will incorporate the sensor from the 1Ds Mk2 into a body like the 1D Mk2n (same build quality, autofocus and frame rate), but it will be priced around $500.

I have my name on the waiting list.

This is starting to sound like the rumor thread about canon changing to a foveon sensor and a non EOS mount system for the pro cameras to be coming at the PMA? Of course that would drive the prices down like the FD mount lenses and bodies? Mike

The features of 3D have been discussed so many times and the camera was supposed to be introduced "soon" for at least 3 years now. It almost seems old now and we should wait for the upgrade... 4D?

4D is a downgrade from 3D.

I would love for this to be true, but announcing something 2 weeks after the biggest camera show in the world seems bizarre. Maybe if there were some enormous sporting event coming up, but alas it seems like another 5 month wait until PMA for further announcements.

Still stranger things have happened.

I agree it sounds bizarre, but truth be told, I've heard the same thing, but didn't hear details thanks to the wonders of Non-Disclosure Agreements - only an approximate release date.

But hey, I won't be offended if no one believes me...everyone says they know something, yadda yadda. Time will tell

I fully agree. The value of these tools is exactly what you can do with them NOW. Especially DSLR bodies are not investments, but expenses. That said, of course you shouldn't buy any other Canon DSLR than 400D just now, if you can manage with your current body.

Within next X months Canon will certainly introduce a follower to 1Ds2. They can't increase the price very much, so it will cause major downwards pressure to the retail value of second-hand 1DsII bodies.

After another Y months Canon will likely introduce a follower to 1D2N, which probably matches or exceeds the current 1Ds2 in almost all aspects, but is priced competitively against Nikon D2whatever. That will further drive down the retail prices of current 1Ds2.

It is not likely for Canon to introduce both new pro bodies simultaneously, because that would cause a very steep drop in the retail value of current 1Ds2.

I think given the age of the 1 series it's natural for people to speculate about replacements. I think talk of 5D and 30D replacements is a bit silly though.

Most seem to think there will only be one 1 series, but I'd personally prefer a 1D III and 1Ds III as separate lines, with the 1D III still be 1.3x crop but now with 20D pixel density. I think Canon needs to offer an alternative to the D2X and I think that role is better suited to a 1D III not a FF 1Ds III. Of course if Canon could introduce a 22MP FF, with 8fps @ $5K that would change things. If they do unify the 1 series, then I can't see them charging $8K while giving current 1D II owners no alternative. They would then have to introduce a high performance model like a 3D to compensate IMO.
