If the 400L /5.6 IS arrives it is overdue and will sell like crazy. The 35 /1.8, why is what I'm asking if it's true? The 35L /1.4 is fantastic, but does it make the 35 /2.0 look so bad we need a 35 /1.8? The rumored 50L /1.2 seems likely and very wanted, I'll buy one ASAP if it shows up Merged 1D possible, but at the rumored price it seems to be alienating many potential 1DMkll owners.Maybe two versions will arrive but have similair builts to lower manufacturing costs. Maybe, one aimed at sports / action shooters and one at the high end market. And again the 3D will fail to show light of day, despite the fact that alot of us want it.

The rumoured new lens is a 100-400/4 IS I believe, not a 400/5.6.
Personally what I think we will see in new cameras are an increase in DR - I think there was a post by Chuck Westfall that Canon see 2007 as the year of increased DR, although I can't recall the link - anyone got it?
They certainly seem to think they can boost high ISO performance in the near future:
http://www.dslrphoto.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/07/Future_DSLRs.pdf
The other rumour I have heard which seems unlikely to me is that a 30D or slightly above level camera is to be intro'd around Photokina, a bit bigger than the 30D - maybe something with a 1.3 sensor?
Some camera with a pellicle mirror also seems to keep cropping up - hate to think how you would clean the sensor.

Actually, it;s both the 400 5.6 & the 100-400 f4.

The 35/1.4 is for most af us a very expensive lense. The 35/2 may be nice, but the build quality is not good. An updated version (aka 35/1.8) with USM and a similar feel as the 28/1.8 50/1.4, 85/1.8 etc would make sense and at a price at still less than a third of the 35/1.4 will not take away much from the sells of the L-version (because the people that feel they need such a lense will still feel they need it...not the cheapo version).

I remember saying the same thing, over and over....

Now, I'm not so sure. At least I don't have to dock the camera.

If they lay down a 100-400 f/4L, I'm hooked.

OK, I'm already hooked, but that would be my next fix.

One thinkg I am not sure about is the announcement date. for example Nikon introduced the D80 last week, well ahead of Photonika. Will Canon do likewise with their new bodies?

Hi EB-1. I have heard that Canon is presenting "something" new on August 24th. I am patiently waiting ...

Great, I will be gone by then and no internet. After returning in September my bodies will probably be worthless on the B&S .

I think the long standing rumors of a baby digital rebel will come to fruition. We'll see some kind of very simple, inexpensive ($500), feature reduced digital SLR (maybe with live preview) and an 18-200 to match up with it.

OK my 2cents -

- a 400D (AKA rebel2) - the 350D with a bigger LCD and the AF of the 30D

- a 40D - the AF of the 5D and a new 11 MP sensor (basically something nice to bolt the 17-55 2.8 IS to)

- a 70/200 f4 IS

- and for the dreamers - a 200 f2 L IS

What I hope to see:

*EOS 3D
*EOS 1Ds Mk III

*100-400 f/3.5-4.5 L IS and no Push pull zoom
*100-300 f/4 L IS
*50 f/2 1:1 Macro USM
*TS-E 17
*8mm linear Fisheye lens
*45-130 f/2.8 IS L (Equivalent to around 70-200 on APS-C bodies)
*17-70 f/4 L (With or without IS) which would be a great walkabout lens to go with the 70-200 f/4 L.
*100 f/2.8 macro IS
*Updated Macro ring flash/twin lite with ETTL II

What we most likely will see:

*EOS 1Ds Mk2n - Bigger LCD, Picture styles, Print button!?
*EOS 450D - Updated 350D, New badge.
*EOS 3000D?
*A few new EF-S lenses
*Mayby a couple of new L's, I rekon a zoom and a prime.

Hope the 35 1.8 rumor is true. Would make sense to compete with the Sigma version. Hmmm Canon color, USM, focus, mmmmmmm. The 70-200 4L IS would be pretty sweet too.

Thats a nice list though the TSE won't happen and the 50/2.0 macro will never sell.
An IS version of the 400/5.6 is a very noticeable omission from Canons range and I seriously believe the market is there for the reintroduction of a 200/1.8.

Agreed on the likely though. I think the updated 350D will be a big step though, simply because of the strength of the competition and the potential damage of not having the best introductory body to the range. I hope the EF-S range is expanded to cement its position in the range if nothing else. I think the 1Ds2n will be a 1Ds3 and while keeping the same sensor, will have an enhanced spec all round and yet a much lower price. Canon MUST bite the bullet if we are to accept they genuinely believe FF is the future. If its expensive then it remains obvious that to Canon, FF remains a low volume, high profit niche format.

Yes we need a 35 f/1.8. Why? Because it's one of the old clunkers with cheap build and coffee grinder AF. Time to replace it and I'd like to see a 35 f/1.8 with USM that was pretty good wide open and very sharp from f/2.8. This should be the first in a long line of ancient UWA/WA primes Canon needs to update. Next should be the 50 f/1.8.

Canon has two options if it merges the 1 series: drop the price big time to near D2Xs levels to stop alienating 1D II owners they expect to upgrade. It's ridculous to expect all of them to fork out $8K for a new camera.

Or if the price is high fill the yawning chasm with a high specced 1.3x crop camera, essentially a detuned 1D II with 20D pixel density in a 5D sized body. They could release a faster sealed 5D, but pixel density is too low and AF performance needs improving. Too soon for a 5D upgrade.

Why not? The current 50mm macro is still popular and is a fantastic lens! Its long over due for a upgrade though, Making it half a stop faster, adding a USM and making it 1:1 instead of 1:2 would make it a very popular lens for those shooting Full frame or APS-H cameras and find the 100mm macro to long.

It would also make a great "Normal" lens on a full framed camera and a nice low light lens!

No need for the 50 f/1.8 then, but a 50 f/2 macro will be much larger, heavier and dearer than a standard 50 f/2. Making it 1:1 would make it even longer as the rear element has to move further from the sensor.

Looks like someone who is under NDA already told or hinted to you about the upcoming new products; some of which will be announced on Aug 24 and the rest 2-3 days before Photokina itself.

Regarding the sensor on the new 1DS MKIIN / 1Ds MK III:

Is it generally expected that the sensor on the new 1Ds would at least be comparable tothe 5D in terms of ISO noise performance despite climbing to 18MP/22PM pixels?

I work for a Canon dealer and we have been instructed to clear all 350D's because a top secret replacement is due for arrival. That is straight from our buying group.

Just thought that I would put in my 2c

cheers

Canon seem to think that they can push high ISO to 6400
http://www.dslrphoto.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/07/Future_DSLRs.pdf
So matching or exceeding the hihg ISO of the 5D should be no bother.
