I really shoudnt care one way or the other but some stupidity just rubs me the wrong way. I was at another forum (one that will remain nameless) and someone posted that they had just bought a 30D and that the camera was far more advance than they were ready for. They said the had read the manuel 3 times and still didnt get it, and they ask if someone could explain ISO, what are A-DEP, M, Av, Tv, P,and what is WB.

I wanted to scream.... You just spend over $1000 on somethign that you know nothing about. I should be use to this by now, considering that we all know money doesnt equal brains. Maybe Im just upset that I wasted my time reading the post to begin with.

Don't you know by now some people have too much money than they know what to do with?

How many people own Leicas and don't even use them, it's just a status item.

Some people have all the money and luck.

You think buying a 30D and not knowing how to use it is bad?

I take it you haven't read any posts by TheBulbMogul on 'another forum' then?

I think I was just at that nameless forum last night checking up on it. I ended up quite happy I hadn't joined, as it's done a total 180 in the past few months.

Darn right. One of my friends from years ago has become a complete Leica snob, but never actually goes shooting and has nothing to show for it. I just stared at him as he trashed my Canon gear as junk:

More money than sense. Tell him it's defective and shouldn't have all of those buttoms. Tell him I'll give him $500 for it and have it fixed on my own. :-)

A few things:

1) Money doesn't equal brains. But knowledge doesn't equal brains, either. He's short on knowledge. That doesn't make him stupid.

2) The manual isn't the best learning material out there.

3) Everybody has to start somewhere. Most P&S cameras are poor learning tools.

4) There are many people with a low skill-to-equipment ratio. I'm sure this guy isn't the worst. The 30D is either an extravagance or a modest camera depending on who you ask.

5) He's trying to learn. Wouldn't it piss you off more if he set his camera to Green Box and pretended to be as cool as you?

I wouldn't be too critical of this person's "stupidity". They're not one of those people who keep the camera on full auto or icon modes all the time, never read the manual, and just use it as a really expensive point and shoot. This is someone who has tried reading the manual, and who wants to know how to use the more advanced modes of the camera, but doesn't have sufficient photographic background to understand the concepts.

Hopefully, before plowing through the manual a fourth time, they will read an introductory photography book, or take a class (my local community college has a non-credit night class that would be great for this person, maybe theirs does too).

hey, I go out driving in NJ every day, and people who spend $60,000 or even $160,000 don't know how to drive....well

If the manual is something that lists abbreviations all over, then I can see not understanding it the first time. Without a good explination of some terms, or a more 'English' definition, or perhaps examples, it can be difficult a beginner if they have no idea if f/6.3 is better than f/2.8 (bigger is better, right? ), or if ISO 100 is better than ISO 1600 (again, bigger is better )

Having money and being stupid isn't a crime, sadly it's also not painful, but they might have realized that it will produce better photos than a P&S, and you can't fault them for that. They're a n00b and we all did start somewhere. Let them use the green box mode for a while, get used to the camera, and learn slowly. They at least did try reading the manual before coming and posting about their camera not working...

...or you could simply recommend a good source on the web, or a good book to read. You'd probably feel better in the end as well

Reminds me of a post on here some time ago about a member who did a shoot and the kid at the photo shoot had a 1DmII or sumthing with a canon lens with the silver line (crappiest canon lenses for those who dont know) and he stated that he used that lens because the black and silver matched well with the body

I got my Rebel XT kit before I even knew what "aperture" was. I guess I took a risk and it worked out.

I won't buy the white L telephotos because they don't match my body color

Ok I don't get it. Exactly what is it that makes you want to cry or scream? How does the fact that other people have money to spare and desire to learn effect your photography? Why do you care?

How much did you spend on your computer? Do you know everything there is to know about it? If not, perhaps you should have bought a cheaper one to learn from so you wouldn't rub yourself the wrong way? How about your car, your house, even your shoes, your sunglasses?

Personally I think the 30D is a great camera to learn with and I applaud the guy for having the heart to ask questions.

I don't care about people like this at all, until they start advertising themselves as wedding photographers and charging £250 for a wedding and making the professionals look like expensive rip-off merchants until the couple finally see their s**t album the 30D dickwad gives them.

what i hate isnt someone who buys a 20d and doesnt know how to use it, what i hate is when i see a bastard in union square taking pics with a 1ds mkII and a 24-70L taking pics of dogs... thats a damn professional camera man, not for trivial pics..

a 20d/30d is a family cam, a 1dsII is not

Doesn't mean they'll never know about it! People aren't born with an intimate knowledge of what A-dep means Maybe the best thing would be to answer their questions or point them in the right direction, so they don't have to ask the same questions again.

Who really cares. I'm sure a salesman at the local camera store convinced him it was the best camera around and that he just had to have it.

By the way, how do I get the live LCD to work on my new 30d? I looked the manual up and down and I cant find it anywhere. How can I get a good picture if I can't see what I'm shooting? I think its time to send it back to Canon.
