All of these were taken with a single medium Photoflex Litedome Q39 softbox.

Awesome thread but stupid question time

How do you set your cameras metering when useing strobes/flash?

every time I use a flash 550, I find I have to underexpose in camera by 2 plus stops so its not blown out.

Thanks for insight.

Thanks, will read up on it. That said, did some shots of my neice tonight and found the same problem. I have to under expose both camera -2 plus stops and keep the flash at -1 1/2 to -2 in order not to blow out things.

Example:

I think it's a nice shot. It just needs a reflector camera Left though. IMHO. :-)

It helps to have a handsome model, and your son certainly is, but good lighting and posing technique, such as you've demonstrated, will always bring out the best in any subject.
You know you "done good" when your subject is pleased.
Keep up the good work!

These were all done using a single light set up. Just and Alien Bee B800... usually positioned just slightly to camera right and slightly above model.

First off, nice work! Did you use any light modifier for these shots? I can't tell if there was a softbox/octabox used. I'm going to take my AB800 outside for the first time this weekend and I'm trying to figure if I should bring the octabox or not...

Thanks,

Keith

Keith,
Bring the octabox. Controlling your light just works better with an octa. Plus it gives you a nice soft wash of light over your target. What size do you have?

Wow, Keith you dug up some oldies there. Anyways, those were taken way back when I first started getting into using a strobe, and hadn't yet bought a modifier for my AB. So to answer your question, no they didn't have any kind of modifier. However, nowadays I always shoot with a modifier. Usually a medium softbox, or a beauty dish. And now typically, I use two strobes for shoots. But here is a semi-recent one lighter.

PS- Here is a better edit of that picture you asked about of mine. Way back when I initially posted that, my editing skills were still being honed.

Thanks alot Justin. I may have to get the foldable octabox for location work as the one I have takes too long to put together.

Yeah, I just started at the beginning of the thread and only got to like page 45... I didn't realize how long ago this thread was started. Old shots or not, they are still awesome shots. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Looks like I'll be toting around my octabox...
