All that's on the other side is the bulb that you see through it. I've been online all evening and found Stephen Eastwood has some shots using this idea barebulb. I found there was too much lens flare and lack of contrast so I fastened the bulb to foamcore and cut out a hole using a tam tam stool bottom (circular). The guts of the light fitting are inside a plastic electronics box with mains going in and the 4 core control cable with power and starter feeds coming out to the lamp. These lamps are usually used in large ceiling fittings. The shot was ISO 400 1/160 at f2.5 if I remember right. The EXIF should be intact. Hope this helps..

PS yes that is her boyfriend on the phone. Bodybuilder. Big.Yipes...

Heres some I did a couple of days ago with 1 580ex into a shoot-tru brolly, fired with an st-e2. This set-up works very well for me on location. All were location portraits for magazine stories:

everything in my "fashion" gallery on my site is done with just one light. Sorry I can't link to them though (flash gallery)

What color backdrop is used in that second shot? I just love how it has such subtle ambience.

Thanks! That's a dark red seamless paper backdrop. Glad you liked it!

Here's a new one, not sure how I feel about it yet but I was surprised what was possible with one light, an octabox and no other modifiers or accessories of any kind. Got a bunch from the same shoot that I'm still sorting through, but figured I'd post this as a kind of barometer. Totally unretouched except for the RAW balancing, unsharp mask/resize and the watermark.

Thanks Oasis. I've only just started shooting with the flash in M (no ettl) and find I have way more control over the scene. Thinking of adding another speedlight now too.
Cheers, Dean

Took this one a while back with a cheap clamp on desk lamp and a black towel for a backdrop. Could be better but I still like it.

These were all done using a single light set up. Just and Alien Bee B800... usually positioned just slightly to camera right and slightly above model.

Nice stuff. Here's a single light set-up in deep shade with sunlight sneaking in as backlight. A canon 580EX Speedlight set on 1/2 power on a Strobe Slipper with a Pocket Wizard for triggering wirelessly. Handheld and diffused through a Westcott softbox...
