I am dissapointed, but hopefully there are a couple good lenses besides the 85L II.

These are exactly my thoughts too.

PLEASE let there be at least ONE decent wide L-prime. I'm sliding down the adaptor slope of no return.

This feels like a firmware upgrade with a few 1-series goodies thrown in to sweeten a sour deal. Let's hope the street price reflects the lack of a significant jump in specifications.

The street price is $1399, cheaper than with the 20D came out.

It makes the 20D better but if i still had a 20D not sure i would upgrade but honestly the larger LCD is really a nice feature. When i go from teh 1Dmk2N to the 1Dsmk2, I have trouble with the small LCD. As we predicted a few years ago, there would be a time when the new upgrades would become marginal-- similiarly to computers. Of course once in awhile there will be a big new breakthrough.. Mark

What was the 20D going for when it was initially released?

Well if the price is around $1200, that would bring another question, will Canon bring some thing in the sub $2000 rang to compete with the Nikon D200?

It was $1499 for the body. The kit with the EF-S 17-85 was $1999.

Where's all those people who claimed to have friends who are insiders for Canon who posted all those "real" rumours a week ago?

I've been waitng to see what would replace the 20D this month before getting a 5D. Nothing in the 30D which temps me to save a bit of money and stick with 1.6x.

How much better does the 30D look with the 85L than with the kit lens!

$100 off + more features, many of which could presumably be done with a firmware upgrade, compared to the 20D. Boy, it certainly does seem like Canon is shaking their money maker for every last drop of cash from the consumer. A year and a half in computer terms is a really long time, no? My bankbook should thank Canon though; they've given me confidence to stay with my 300D for another round.

Very true. It trully has been a wonderful ride so far. In a way, it would be nice to see the market level out as far as new upgrades. We're at a point where I would rather see more attention to better glass to accommodate the higher demands of higher resolution bodies.

30D will be a good vacation camera. I don't have to lug the old brick 1D2 around.

well, galbraith's telling it like it is, and that forum base is a bit more influencial on the manufacturers.

i'm betting that while someone's putting wireless flash control into the next body, they're still going to leave out the MLU button just to irk all the big reviewers. It's a funny joke now.

real glass is back in vogue. cool.

"An unexpected upgrade!"

you said it. for me this is a "meh." looks like it's time to snap up a new reduced price 20D.

Looks like 8.2mp is the maximum for 1.6 crop at the moment. ISO 800 performance of the 20D seems to be much better than the D200

If you want more pixels and good high iso performance you have to go FF

Certainly. And the 30D does gives the impression that Canon has way leveled out at this price point. Let's hope they don't do this again (incremental release) becasue surely pouring their energy into incremental releases takes resources away from other pursuits, such as new lenses.

The 20D (and 30D) have the highest pixel density of any Canon DSLR. Cramming in more megapixels would make the noise worse. This may be one of the reasons Canon didn't go up to 10MP with this release.
Or maybe they wanted to keep using the same sensors as the 20D to save money?

Looks like it. But a lot of people only look at pixelcounts and might be going for the 200D now

Come one guys. Don't bash the 30D yet as I know most of you will upgrade in about 2 months and start new threads about how the 30D is better than the 20D. A large amount of people will find the 30D to be a very nice camera.

Upgrade if you are using the 300D/10D or don't if you already have the 20D. As for me...time to take out the credit card.

Canon have done really well to tempt me with this new 30D. It adresses exactly the (minor) issues I'm having with the 20D:
- spot metering
- RGB histogram
- better joystick for AF point selection
- ISO in 1/3 steps
- ISO in viewfinder

But is it enough to upgrade ?

The best news here is the price drop I expect on 20Ds, my 300D is getting a bit creaky

I really don't see why everybody is so bummed about the 30D. It fixes every problem everybody ever had with the 20D. ISO in the VF, 1/3 ISO stops, deeper buffer, etc. I bet the focusing has improved to, just like the 1D2 vs the 1D2n.

They made bunch of nice minor improvements, but I'll be waiting, if 30D's successor would finally have some solution for dust on sensor ...
Sigma and Olympus already have their solutions for the problem and there is at least one interview, where someone from Canon said that they had already considered it for 20D, but it would have been too expensive.
