Hi all!

*************LIST UPDATED: Aug 12 2006**************

This list is possible thanks to Cinstance, PSquared, MarkSaperstein, Foto-z and other FMers that are trying their CZ lenses w/ the 5D. Thanks also to:

Guy Mancuso for his efforts w/ Leica glass and kidigital for 5D mirror mod (see the bottom of this post for more infos).
I've built the list and collected all the infos to try to make a unique point of reference for FMers and all other people that use these great lenses. Hope u'll appreciate my try!

Please, post your CZ/Oly->5D experiences here (tries&mods) to share your findings and keep the list updated. The purpose of this thread is to share experiences with other users and increase the knowledge of the participants: for any other question, please create a new thread or use PMs/Emails.

Thankyou!

CARL ZEISS LENSES
The question "What Zeiss lens for my 5D?" has gained importance in the last days because some CZ lenses won't work on the new 5D. As someone suggested, I've started a new specific topic containing the list that I'll try to keep updated. This list is possible thanks to Cinstance, PSquared, MarkSaperstein, Foto-z and other FMers that are trying their CZ lenses w/ the 5D. Thanks also to: Guy Mancuso for his efforts w/ Leica glass and kidigital for 5D mirror mod (see the bottom of this post for more infos).

Original thread HERE (Started by PSquared)

The lists above are NOT complete. I've considered only the most used CZ/Oly OM lenses on Canon systems. Feel free to expand/correct the lists, this is only a personal humble effort to try to help people like me involved in CZ and/or Olympus OM lenses.

The lists cannot be considered an absolute point of reference but only an indicative guide, because, as noted by other FMers here (Cinstance and MarkSaperstein), adapter's machining precision could vary from piece to piece and a lens that works or not is a matter of very little tolerances (0.1-0.3 millimeters).

Go to this LINK.

Go to "Service and Maintanance", then to "Function Test". They have a "Test Cover Letter" linked as a download for you to fill out. I have them do their 7 Point Function Test as described on the web site. The cost is 49EU. If you decide to only do the test itself, you pay the 49EU. If you proceed with their recommended repairs, such as cleaning, mechanism adjustments, etc, that 49EU gets applied to that repair. They also have a link to a cover letter for a specific repair, if that is all you want done.

I just tried a CZ 4/18 AE on my new 5D with both a Fotodiox and DSLRx adapter, and in each case the mirror seems to get stuck. --c

Charles, I hope the mirror didn't mar the rear glass like it did my MM version. Can you tell whether the mirror hit the glass or the retaining ring?

This is very disapointing that even AE version of CZ 18 f 4 does not work. I have been postponing my getting of 5D and could mean that I would rethink the whole idea of buying it.

The glass is fine, thanks for asking. (I used a lens that already has some marks on the front element so if it got one on the back it wouldn't be the end of the world.)

I don't have a lot of experience with mirrors hitting lenses. What happened was that I used MLU, then pressed the shutter button and the mirror locked up. Pressed again, took the shot, the viewfinder appeared briefly, then blacked out again and I got "Err 99" on top.

I'm assuming this means it got stuck and the camera detected this, brought the mirror back up to the locked position and displayed the error. But I obviously can't tell what it hit.

Michael, someone reported the AE working with the CQ so maybe it is just the Fotodiox and DSLRx it doesn't work for. --c

Thank you Charles. It is a bit scary though to be a fraction of mm away from hitting the lens. It shows that if Canon decides to change something another millimeter, the game can start from scratch (pun not intended).

Followup...

I took a close look at the rear element on the 4/18. There's basically no way for the mirror to hit the glass on this lens; the glass doesn't protrude beyond the flange. I looked more closely and it hits just at the "deepest" part of the flange (leaving a lovely mark) so a slightly thicker adapter should work. Whether that allows IF or not is another story.

In better news, I can confirm that my 2/28 seems to clear fine with the Fotodiox. If checking this one with other adapters, be sure to check if you can turn to infinity as the rear element moves. --c

I taped the rear element of my 2/28 when I tested it.. that seemed to work okay. --c

I can't seem to get the links to work for the CZ 28/2, what are the problems and does anyone know which adaptors are recommended.

Beni, I can confirm that the Fotodiox adapter works with the AE 28/2.. at least my copy. Good infinity focus too. The Fotodiox adapters are pretty easy to get. --c

A short update:

1. I got a Fotodiox Pro adapter to replace/augment my cheap Chinese eb@y knock-off. The Fotodiox is well machined, but significantly thinner. Therefore the lens sits further back in the mount. My CZ 35/2.8 MM which works fine with the Chinese adapter fouls the mirror (without damage thank goodness) when mounted using the Fotodiox. Personally I can't recommend the Fotodiox unless they change the dimensions (or maybe I got one on the rough end of their production tolerances).

2. I have tried the CZ 80-200/4 "MM" with the Chinese adapter, and while it mounts OK, the mirror fouls on return. I expect it would be worse with the Fotodiox. Great shame as this is a super lens.

just read all this now. didn't know it was possible. i have 28/2,8 35/2,8 50/1,7 & 85/2,8 carl zeiss contax lenses. thinking about a 5D with a cameraquest adapter and maybe later a second hand 20-35 2,8L from canon. seen that all lenses will work but there might be a problem with the 50/1,7. i have the AE white mark, not mm green version.
can not imagine it would hit the mirror.. when i look at the lenses phisicaly the 50 is not deeper than the 85, so that should work.
can't wait for christmass...

I use the Cotnax 35mm f2.8MM on my 5D with a Fotodiox adapter with no problem.

i would go to dsrlexchange and contact that man who has already a solution providing different adapters. main problem seems not only the mirror but image-defects and infinity-problems.
i have the following lenses but not digitalcam yet: all ae:
18- 28/2.8- 35/2.8- 35 pc- 45- 50/1.4- 60/ 1:1- 85/2.8- 85/1,4-135/2.8
btw: i have my doubts his test setup or adapters: they are simply not blackened enough, showing different or noreflexes when using differrently thick adapters. i know what reflexions are-from rotapan-slitcameras like horizon. i am in real panorama-business using rotapancams.
i would like to know form the users how good these adapter are blackend.

in your list: green 16=MM white 16=AE (means: the smallest or do you say biggest? fstop tells you if the lens is MM or AE. on some contax-cameras old AE-lenses show sometimes different fstop in finder.no effect on result.

in dslr-exchange they say photo huppert is offering the novoflex-adapter, which is working properly on any canon d. i could imagine since they are working very precisely.

these are the issues of zeiss to canon:
a) infinity
b) reflexions
c) mirror
our experts should follow both discussions. unfortunately i cannot help much. i have only the lenses.

Olympus 21/3.5 and adapter of unknown origin (Chinese??): no problems on 5D.

you need the german high precision adapter from foto huppert. all canon cams(listed there-also 5d). http://www.foto-huppert.de/default2.asp
push left button
go to canon foto shop read english text or german and download produktinformation download 2(english).
i am actually asking him if all lenses or which ones have been tested. 169 euro. not cheap but you can most probably forget that mirror-hacking.
consequence before doing such stupid things. information first. e.g in contax-info.de (german version is free)

Looking for info on compatability of the Zuiko 21 3.5 and 2.0 with the 5D.

The first post on this thread gives a dead link for futher information. Can anyone give me a summary on whether there are problems or could the link get fixed?

Best,

Dave M

Hey Charles

I went through exactly the same experience with my EOS 5D and the 15mm 3.5. Several other lenses created a small mirror "thunk" but didn't cause the mirror to be re-lifted.

After much pain and suffering using a number of adapters, I went back to the store where I bought the 5D and tried the 1ds MkII. Absolutely no problems with any lenses or adapters.

Since you sold me both your 18 F4 and 28 F2 I assume that you are no longer committed to using the CZ lenses on a Canon body. However if I am wrong I suggest you get the 1DS MKII and save yourself the pain of mirror banging. It is now clear that for some unknown reason Canon made the 5D mirror longer than the 1DS MKII. Go figure

I can't read the "ATTENTION: please, read HERE" - Links :-(
(for example Zuiko 21/3,5)

If I try, I get:

That thread was moderator deleted because of some improper posts from a forum member. After the issue was looked into, the thread was later re-built from page caches, but some of the links are inoperative as a result.
