Hi all,

It seems like everyday dozens of new members are joining this awesome forum. Welcome to N&W! I thought I would gather a few suggestions for all of those who are just joining.

-Please try to include the EXIF information (aperture used, shutter, ISO, lens, etc.) when you post a shot, especially if you are asking for critique. This way someone may be able to offer a suggestion because he/she would know what you did.

-Fortunately, I don't think there has been a size restriction on images but try to size them down reasonably. Keep in mind some users are using standard size monitors. Maybe something around 750-775 pixels on the widest side.

-For those who would like to post images here but do not have a subscription please follow these steps:

To post images without a subscription you first need to upload your image to a third party site (try www.bytephoto.com or www.imageshack.us). After doing that right click on the image you uploaded and select "Properties". You will then see a URL Address, highlight and copy this address and then paste in a thread here at FM. Now we will be able to see your shot. If you are using Netscape or a similar browser you can simply right click and select "Copy Image Location" and then paste that. This forum doesn't require you to include the standard Image tags before and after the link. All you need is the link from the properties.

-Try to offer comments/critiques to other members. Don't feel like you aren't yet qualified to offer critique simply because you are new. Look at the shot and see what appeals to you and say something like, great color and composition or maybe I may have done this differently like so and so. This is the only way we can learn to improve our shots when we are out in the field shooting.

-If you are going to post multiple images please do them in the same thread even if the type of species is different. With the increasing amount of posts/day often times posts that haven't received any comments/suggestions are being bumped off the first and second page because of this.

-With the above being said, try to go past the first page when looking/commenting at posts. You may be surprised what beautiful shot there may be on the 4th or 5th page.

-Most importantly have fun! This is truly the finest photography forum out there. The quality of the images and the quality of the members here are just amazing.

I know I have learned a lot since I've joined this forum and I hope to continue!

And thank you to Fred and all the Moderators that keep this site running!

-Mark

Mark,
Thank you for the tips. I do have a subscription and I don't have any problems uploading single images but if I provide links from my pbase to display more than one images, it will display only the links or the address to the links and not the images themself. What do I do wrong or differently then?

Thanks,
Joshua

I use a pbase.com account. As was pointed out to me when I first tried and had problem posting, you have to add ".jpg" to the end of your actual image address. That should allow you to actually see the image in the post, rather than just the link.
Hope this helps.
- Ken

Joshua,

As Ken said be sure to include the extension .jpg if it isn't already there from the link you copied under the image properties. Are you using a free Pbase account? I have heard Pbase doesn't allow hot linking if you are not a paid member. Personally I have had good results with bytephoto.com when uploading multiple images.

Hi Mark,
Thanks for that confirmation and I will try it out tonight when I get home. I have been a pbase "supporter" for quite sometime and been paying my dues. But indeed, that could have been the issue otherwise.

Thanks again,
Joshua

Thanks Mark, and I'll second your comment about learning. I wasn't that interested in wildlife until I started visiting here. And, the people and their comments couldn't be more encouraging and helpful. Your post is most appropriate......

Mark..... I am a new member of FM, and also new to the photography world too. I am eager to become a part of this site, but I have had no luck at posting photos. My upload icon is turned on, and I am assuming that I am good to go. I have not been able to show any images. Can you walk me through the upload process? Talk slow, I'm blonde. Thanks, Cinbad Oh, buy the way, I have had no problem posting dialog.

I can never get my pictures to open directly in my posts so I am trying your method. If you see a photo, it worked. If only the url appears, can you tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

Mark, i would really like to post in this outstanding forum. However, where do u paste the URL address?

Cheers,

Ern,

After you have uploaded your image to a third party host click on "New Topic" (in the upper right corner). A box will come up and just paste the link there. Remember you are copying the URL Address that is from the Properties.

Dear Mark
Very helpful. You say there may be no size restriction, but it sounds as if one DOES need to resize, otherwise it will be off screen, yes?(That is, the server does not resize to fit a frame, as some browsers do.)

I also have many very large, p25 files and most are in Prophoto RGB, mostly TIFF. I assume it would be better to convert to sRGB and jpg, yes?

thanks
Victor

Good words. It's easy to feel unworthy to comment when you see the standard of work on this board. Also, I would like to add to Marks words, encourage new members and comment on work even if it's not the best. When I was first posting I found it a little disheartening to find no replys/comments.
Thanks again, Mark
