Does anyone have any idea what may be happening with the 24-105? I have been waiting patiently but now reaching a point where I need a lens (walk around). My question is this: Do I wait it out (and no one can seem to tell me how long) or opt for a different lens. Any thoughts on the matter are appreciated.

The range seemed perfect add IS and what a walk around.

Since there's nothing more frustrating than doing nothing, here's my suggestion: Go to the B&S forum and pick up a nice used lens. You should be able to sell it later for about the same price. Consider any small loss (say, shipping charge) to be a cheap rental fee.

For the 20D, I'd look at
-- 17-40 (you might like it enough to keep even after 24-105 purchase)
-- 24-70 (ditto, but *instead* of the 24-105)
-- 28-135 IS or 17-85 IS (these you'd want to swap out for the new lens)

Patience is generally rewarded.

But if you're really itching for a 24-105 there are other brands available. I recently bought a relatively inexpensive Sigma 24-105 f/2.8-4.0 mainly as a lightweight walk-about lens for my 10D, but also to see how useful the focal range really would be. I was actually quite surprised by this little $200 lens. No, it's not L glass but it's really not bad! Yes, I have a Canon 24-105 on back-order but this little Sigma will suffice for my current purposes. (In fact, I shot my WA 179 entry with this lens: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/295677 )

Alternatively, you could look for a good deal on a 24-70L f/2.8 which is still a wonderful lens. Many are up for sale right now.

Personally I'm still waiting.
I did have the 28-135IS which I got for cheap on the B&S forum.
Good lens, it was my travel lens when I went to Argentina.
Alas I sold it too soon...oh well...wait I shall

I'll go for the 28-135 IS, in the meantime. The 5D is full frame, so the perfect range is the 24-105 or 28-135.

28-135 IS is not a sharp lens. Its only sharp at f11.

You will struggle to find one especially now that all of them have been recalled back by Canon.
Don't mean to spoil anyone's party, but it has to be mentioned that there is a flaw with the lens.
I would hate a surprise like that, me, so my advice is: be patient, it truly is a great lens as long as Canon can iron out the flare problem.
I am gonna wait it out.

Ken,
are you using the little Sigma on a FF or a crop body? Thanks in advance.
Sheila, can you please let us know the results of your tests, especially with regard to the flare problem everyone is talking about, thanks in advance.

I deliberately shot into the sun yesterday late afternoon and did not have a problem. I'll keep you posted.
