While playing around with GIMP, I've discovered some very good tone techniques for creating toned images. For reference, the original photo used is located here (part of the collection of images that my brother passed on to me, taken during the time he was in Africa).

Using GIMP, I created 4 total layers. The base layer is the target fill color. I chose this color by selecting the skin of the forhead of the woman holding the bag. I then used GIMP color choser and found the primary color that was created using this color (no greyscale color). In this case, the color is a burgandy color (R=8a, G=2d, B=00). Has to be a primary color for this technique. Anyway, the other three layers are duplicates of the target image that I converted to greyscale (you can chose your favorite method for this). The top layer set to Value, second layer set to Grain Merge, and third layer set to Addition. Below is the result (I did autolevel):

Don't know if any of you guys have ever heard of Power Tone by CreoScitex, but this method is intended to duplicate that type of result. Using GIMP, I created 3 total layers. The base layer is the target fill color. I chose this color by selecting the skin of the forhead of the woman holding the bag. Does not have to be a primary color since this method automatically compensates, but I left the color per the sample above (R=8a, G=2d, B=00). The other two layers are duplicates of the target image. The top layer set to Value, and the second layer set to Saturation. Below is the result (I did autolevel and white balance):

Anyway comments are welcome.

If I had highspeed, I would spend the few minutes creating a photo-blog, but alas, all I have is 56K (my brother too). Eventually, some of the best will be posted as I do a rendering here and there. I just wish I could show you all these shots. They are fantasic. I'm just glad I wasn't the one taking these pictures (my brother told me that some of the days had temperatures in excess of 115° F in the shade).
