hi guys,

someone is selling their 1D they only got it a month ago and is a refurb from Canon.

What does that mean? Is it as good as new? the accuations count is less than 100. But doesn't canon reset it? So does that mean its still good for 149,900 more accuations?

I recently got the 28-135mmIS from the Canon outlet here in the UK
it came packed as new with not a scratch on it. they offer 6 months warranty instead of the usual 12

overall I was sceptical about rerfurbished.. but as it was direct from Canon presumably they dont send out goods in a poor state of repair

I would definatly buy from them again.. to all intents my Lens Looks brand new

I bought my wife a refurbed EOS-3 and 28-135 IS. They both look new and operated just fine.
The number of shots will vary because they may or may not have replaced certain items that were defective. No matter the case I think you will be happy.

Some information you could use is;

Per Chuck Westfall, the vast majority of refurbed digital or film bodies and lenses are new equipment that a dealer has not sold and returned it to Canon. It is the law that once the equipment was sold to the dealer it cannot be resold as new therefore "refurbed" and placed into a white cover box. This is Canon policy.

In your case the 1D body might have been at a "smaller" dealer that simply could not sell it. If you have access to the serial number call Repair Canon USA (either facility) and ask for a repair search for that serial number. If there is no repair record it was indeed a unsold return.

Is there a refurb site on Canon's site

Here in the UK Canon are using ebay, at first they were selling in small quantities but in the Last month or so... they have been selling a lot more, they trade as
'Canon Outlet'
about three 1Ds models have gone recently, plus a boat load of 300d,s and 10d,s
although the prices have crept up in recent weeks with the buy now option

I've been using a referb Elan 7e for about a year now. Works great. And it was like half the cost of a new one!!!

Well, it's still a bit hit or miss, I'm afraid. I ordered a refurb 1D from Samy's in LA for a very good price a little while ago. When it came (in the white box), it looked brand new and everything seemed fine. But as it turned out it had the famous banding problems at ISO 400 and higher and several dead pixel. Samy's replaced it with another refurb - same result: Looked brand new but awful banding problems. I finally upgraded to a MarkII. I don't blame Samy's for this, they were very helpful to resolve the problem. But I wonder how it can be possible that a pro camera body leaves Canon as "reburbished" and then has such obvious flaws... Your mileage my vary though.

Now I'm scared... I guess I have to take that chance.. I live 20mins from Canon Canada, so maybe I can take it there... if I have problems.

I've bought a fair amount of referb gear ... some of it Canon lenses. I figure if it is referbed, a technician has looked at it. That is better than the majority of production items. I have never received any referb gear that I have had problems with. YMMV ...

My refurb 1D was better than my new one . . . . had to send the new one back to be calibrated.
