Your friend is right that the system won't allow the same type of illuminated focus point that we have in the 5D2, Rebels, 60D, 6D, 1D4, 1D3s etc. However, all this firmware is saying is that it will light up the point with the 1/2 shutter press (and hopefully with back button AF-on pressed) while in AI Servo. It also states that it won't stay on continuously because that would interfere with metering so somehow it will be intermittent.

I'm sure this is real. CR also had the 7D one prematurely and then it got pulled also. But it soon became true.

f/8 AF on the 5D3 is not that far fetch considering the Nikon D800 has this feature.

it's back up.. ver 1.1.1 I'm downloading... but I dont have any lenses that slow I'd have to stack extenders

If Canon doesn't release an update to fix the AF issue on the 5D Mark III, I wonder how long it would take the guys over at Magic Lantern to backwards engineer the fix from the 1DX and implement a hack for the 5D Mark III.

Don't think it matters. Download the windows version and stick it on a CF card. Or select Lion and download that one to get the DMG file. But I'm sure either way it will give you the same file in the end to put on the CF card.

The mac one downloaded in like 5 seconds, the windows version is taking forever...I guess they are getting hit hard

I'm sure both will give you the same .FIR file. The mac one is 33.1MB and named 1DX00111.FIR

EDIT: Yep, both contain the exact same file so really shouldn't matter what OS you use if you are installing via CF card.

I cant wait to see the illuminated (brighter) option that they have added, it could be what I need with bright lenses in daylight....knock on wood

dude i was so excited I downloaded the 1.0.6 lol

Sorry for not sharing the enthusiasm - with 1.1.1 installed, in Servo mode now I have all (15) AF points as well as the grid flashing at me in irregular intervals, and in One Shot mode I still can't see diddly squat. This is a fundamental hardware problem, one that Nikon saw and addressed in design, and Canon completely overlooked. Let's hope the 1DXN has it fixed.
