The Canon EOS 6D was just unveiled! This entry-level full frame DSLR features a 3.2" Clear View II LCD, WI-FI capabilities and GPS built-in. Even though it is similar to the Canon D60 in size, it will not have a built-in flash nor articulated LCD.

Viewfinder coverage will be approximately 97% and the new AF system will have 11 focusing points sensitive to -3 EV. The Canon 6D is expected to be priced at $2,099 and start shipping in December 2012. Detailed features below:

So 11 point AF and only one cross-type point? ..Revival of focus and recompose technique confirmed!

Kinda disappointing that the 6D is basically a repackaged 5D II with a few insignificant tweaks. If I were in the market for my first full frame camera, I'd go for Nikon D600. It is a better camera in every possible way, esp the auto focus system.

For example:

6D AF - 11 point AF, 1 cross type point.
VS
D600 AF - 39 point AF, 9 cross type points.

Why would this be a better buy than the 5D2 anyone?

Just when you think that Canon has finally got it- specs of 7D, auto-focus in 5d3- they revert back to their old behavior.....WiFi and GPS notwithstanding, what an underwhelming and non-compelling offering!

Disappointments:

1. The joystick is gone.
   
   
2. All the buttons on the left side are gone.
   
   
3. Top panel buttons have been simplified to single function only.
   
   
4. Single SD Card slot only.
   
   
5. 1 cross type AF point only.
   
   
6. Old style viewfinder doesn't have LCD overlay like 7D or 5D3
   

1. 6D inherits silent shutter mode from the 5D3.
   
   
2. Android/iOS app that lets cellphone control 6D via Live View
   

Just my personal opinion, but if I was in the market for my first full frame SLR I'd go for a 5d II before they're discontinued. This release seems a little underwhelming.

It has some upsides over a 5d2.

New LCD , spirit level, more range for bracketing and exp compensation etc.
But it all looks like lipstick on a pig.

But wow. -3 EV for that centre point. Nuts. Why. Why on this? Bizarre.

A few interesting positives - the centre af point is sensitive to -3ev (compared to -1 on d600) and wifi and gps and I'm sure it'll follow the trend of having a much better screen than the d600 and 1/8000th maxshutter (which was a mistake for nikon i believe) but generally I'd tend to agree - disappointing unless it's $1800.... Which it's not.

Ive always preferred the ergonomics of canon but that's not likely to matter to "enthusiasts" who are unlikely to have their cameras in their hands for 10 hours at a time so, if I had no lenses, I'd likely buy the d600 too.

Canon need to be really careful in the next few years. While I personally consider the 5d3 to be a much better camera than the d800 for me (although $500 too expensive at launch), many don't and now there's a camera which I think we would all agree is just under spec for the money. When the original 5d came out it was a revelation, and the 5d2 too, but the market perception is one of falling behind and overcharging at the moment.

is it me, or no one sees that the 6D beats D600 in high iso and shutter speed?

4.5 fps instead of 3.9fps
25600 ISO instead of 6400 ISO
2 more focus points.
3.2" screen instead of 3" screen.

For that, you lose;
1% less viewfinder coverage.
1 megapixel

Also one uses CF cards and the other uses SD cards, which may be seen as an advantage or disadvantage depending on what you already own.

For what its worth, I am still happily shooting with the original 5D and have seen nothing worth spending thousands on in any of the new bodies.

We haven't seen anything yet.

Manufacture can say whatever native value they want. 1DX suppose to have 2 stop "native" iso over D4 but tests shows they are pretty much the same at all ISO levels. One is honest about usable ISO and the other one is about look good on spec sheet

Look again. The 6D gives you 11 points / 1 cross-type, while the D600 gives you 39 points and 9 cross-types.

The 6D and D600 are for people getting into FF photography. (people who are not heavily invested yet). There is basically no reason to get the 6D over the D600.

Well in low light you'll be more likely to. Pros here's, cons there.

And 2 stops higher ISO. And -2 EV higher low light sensitivity. And it is lighter and smaller.

Funny: This is the camera I was asking for one year ago as a 5D II Follow up.

Overall it seems quite disappointing. Don't know why I was expecting something different.

Underwhelming.

I can see no real reason to consider upgrading my 5DII to this as I have no need for a touchscreen, wifi or GPS.

I'm not the kind of user they are looking for but if I were I'd buy the D600 every time.
