This lens yields excellent resolution and contrast in macro shooting at typical working apertures. I frankly have not used it wide open, but could do some test shots for comparison.
AF is accurate, although slow. It\'s a unit focusing lens, not internal AF. The front extends considerably when focusing very close. I use it exclusively in manual focus when shooting macro.
Direct focusing is only to 1:2 (half life size). The macro adaptor is a multi-element lens that attaches to the filter threads and extends range to 1:1 (life size). Focusing with the adaptor slightly overlaps the range without it (i.e., you attach it when you want to work in the range between 1:2 and 1:1).
