So if I understand correctly, all the existing hyperfocal scales are based on a standard of acceptable apparent sharpness which is old and modern digital resolution has made obsolete? Something like focal length divided by 1500?
I am afraid so. If I set any of my old Cotax lenses to the hyperfocal distance claimed on the lens, the results are way out when examined at 100% in RAW. My friend recently said \"stop it to two under\" (ie meaing put the focus mark on the f8 HD marker) when focusing his Zeiss 21mm hyperfocally. This was based on his film days. As it turned out his assumption was totaly out in the digital world. After testing the lens it turned out that even at f16 the hyperfocal distance point was barely 2mm away from infinity position before either the centre or the edge sharpness started to go. I was very surprised.
