Exactly. For a \"normal\" crop lens that\'s fast the original tamron 17-50 is an excellent choice. Very good image quality, as wide an aperture as you can get, and half the price of the 17-40.
If you do go fullframe, then a 17-40 or 16-35 which is a \"normal\" crop lens will be an UWA and have to be replaced anyway.
If you really want one of those 2, the 17-40 would be my call
