little guys basketball (u9)

Even though the middle-school gyms have some improved lighting with the new high efficiency flourescents, I am still battling the sharpness of the 24-70 f2.8 at iso 1600-3200 and 1/500. Noise is not much of the problem as the lens and I thought I had a decent copy. Strobing is not an option.

These little guys U9 play hard and is their first year in the “travel” league as 3rd graders.

Sitting on my butt the whole time, here is a set from their first two games. I don’t think I am degrading sharpness through unsteady hands (unlike when shooting at 400mm), as I get similar results when I just take a standing still portrait at f2.8.

Any thoughts on getting them sharper? Or, is that about what you would expect from the 7D and this lens? (these were not cropped too much from original)

An even dozen.

12. 3673 (I have two versions of this lens, under fluorescent this version really back focuses but varies by distance so no single MFA works. I will be trying my other version next week.
