Today morning this guy was resting in a pine in front of my balcony, ~35m (115 feet) away.
There are even mistletoes seeds in the perch, probably expelled by this same bird.

Taken with a D7000 + TC16A teleconverter + Nikkor 800mm f/5.6 AIS EDIF (= 1280mm f/9) + tripod + wireless remote control.
ISO 200, f/9 at 1/80s. Heavy crop ~40-50%. Effectively the lens was 1280 x 1.5 = 1920mm! just mirror lock up for 3-5s and a remote trigger can produce a not blurred image.
Even wide open (f/5.6 x 1.6) I think this lens + TC16A deliver useable images.
