Re: Must needed lenses for landscape photography...

I\'m going to sound like a broken record, considering how often I write this, but... it is impossible to say what focal lengths are \"needed\" for landscape photography. It really comes down to your own preferences and approach to the subject, along with what camera you use and what you intend to do with your photographs.

For every photographer who swears up and down that landscape lenses are wide angle lenses, you\'ll find another who is very fond of shooting at longer focal lengths. Since you have the 24-70, I presume that you already use it to make landscape photographs, right? If so, do you find yourself unable to produce the photograph you want most often because you can\'t go wide enough or because you can\'t go long enough? The answer to that question is a great starting point.

With the answer to that question in mind, there are perhaps three possibilities:

1. You might just decide that you can do your landscape with the existing 24-70mm zoom. That is not as crazy as it may sound. I\'m convinced that we have the ability to \"see\" with the gear we are using. When I go out with a single 50mm prime, somehow I \"see\" the world in ways that allow me to make effective photographs with that focal length. A couple years ago I shot for a full week in the Sierra High country with only the 24-105 in order to save weight, and I was surprised to find that I didn\'t\' really miss my wider or longer lenses.

2. If you need wider (and I\'m assuming you shoot full frame) you might look for a used or refurbished Canon EF 17-40mm f/4 L. On full frame this would be a great complement to the lens you have now, and it gets you into the ultra wide range.

3. If you need longer (and most landscape photographers I know would rather add a longer lens than a shorter one to what you already have), a nice used copy of the excellent non-IS version of the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4 can be found for a reasonable price - and it is a really excellent lens.

What do you guys need to have for the majority of your landscape work? I don\'t have a huge budget, but I don\'t want to buy cheapo lenses that I\'ll be disappointed in. Currently I only have the 24-70 and 50 1.8G. I really want to round out my focal length choices with a super wide and telephoto, but probably can\'t get both at once.

Curious what you guys really like to use and what recommendations you would have for a guy that can\'t afford the holy trinity right now... My thoughts about possible options:

Wide/Super Wide
-----------------------------
16-35 f/4 (top of my price range)
20-35 f/2.8
20mm f/2.8
Third-party options?

Telephoto
---------------------
80-200 (top of my price range unfortunately)
70-300 VR
Third-party options?
