I may have a chance to do some product shots in the near future. I have been practicing and need some feed back. On this shot I am not happy with the edges of the bottle they seem to be a bit over exposed. How would you light this shot?

All comments welcome.

Regards,
Greg

I make an 'arch' out of black paper or card and suspend it behind the subject, then you can play with widths and distances to achieve the darkened shoulders effect

Thanks dhphoto,

I will try the arch and see if I can do a little better.

Much better, why not give it some 'zing' and put a mirror at the front to catch the top light and make a highlight down one side of the bottle

Some ideas:

The bottle is floating in the air; why not use some underground, a mirror or reflective material? You can try to use some black velvet instead of black paper; it can absorb even more light. Sometimes a gradient in the background can create some depth; you can achieve it by preventing the light hitting the background by tilting the softbox.

Thanks Guys,

With this particular shot I am looking for a punch out that can be used in several applications. This might be supper imposed on a picture of a golf course or used on a web site. Thanks for the suggestions and I will try them all.

Regards,
Greg

Nice work, Greg!

The final effort came out quite nice. I know you were going for the 'traditional' product shot, but did you consider throwing some color in there? BTW, did you shoot the knife and the lemon too?

I should try to shoot a white on white scene, lately I have been into black on black stuff...

Aah that takes me back - shooting phones on perspex (plexiglass), I haven't done that in years, nice modelling, particularly on the first shot

Thanks Tim!

Your shots are great. Yes I did shoot the lemon and knife picture. As for adding color I decided not to because of the wide range of applications that this shot will be used.

Here is another end use. Using the paint brush I tinted the bottle pink to better match the rest of the shot.

Regards,
Greg

Thanks Greg!

I really dig the 'drama' in the knife/lemon shot - excellent work!

Sure hope that red ad hasn't been published.. the word "loose" is wrong, it should be "lose"..

I was wondering when someone would take me to task on the typo. It was corrected before it was released. I am the world’s worst proofreader.
