Is anyone aware of a lens cap alternative for the 300 2.8 L non-IS? I'm about ready to try to make one, but wondering if anyone else had any experience with this?
I don't like the idea of the hood so much and was wondering if there was a cap that would fit.....(I've even tried to see if various pieces of tupperware would fit.)
In an FM thread "300 2.8 IS Accessories" an IKEA tupperware cap was mentioned on Oct 11th this year. I think it was in their REDA series. I am not 100% certain of the exact name of the product, and I don't know whether the IS version has a different front diameter than the non-IS.
I don't yet have this lens, but when I do, I will certainly replace the original cap with a more compact one, since I like to protect my lens fronts from dust as often as possible, and the original cap is too clumsy for me in such use.
You can't beat the Ikea Reda for it's price. You get 5 bowls in different sizes with caps for about $ 2. I have one on my 300/2,8 IS and one on my 500/4 IS.

Can these lids be used with the hood reversed?
I have the Ikea lids - on my 300 2.8 IS, one lid fits the lens hood when in use, but none of them fit the lens itself, so with the hood reversed you will need to find another lid to fit on the end of the lens.
The 300 Kaiser lens cap is 120mm. Can't help with Kaiser for the 500. For the 500 try find the Pyrex/Cornering F-24-PC & F-16-PC [the 24 fits the hood, the 16 the lens.

Rich.
You are wrong.
The Ikea lids fits the lens itself. I use one lid on my 300/2,8 IS and another on my 500/4 IS
