I decided to take some photos with my 5D last night and I noticed quite a bit of noise in a series of photos, enough that I could see it clearly on the rear LCD when reviewing the photos. To me, I see sort of a herringbone noise pattern, which in the full image is still visible zoomed out at 25% (so I don't think this is exacly pixel chimping).
Here are a few crops of the spire of the Empire State Building. These were taken at ISO 400, using a 28-70 f2.8L at 70mm in manual focus mode, f10. (So this is not the reported high iso, AI Servo mode problem.) The noise pattern is also apparent at ISO 100 and 800.
Is this noise characteristic normal on a 5D? I tried quickly trying to get rid of some of the noise using Noiseware, but even after the denoising, the noise was still pretty apparent.
I suppose RFI might be possible. The photo was shot from a rooftop about 2 blocks away from the Empire State Building. As far as I know, there are no antennas on the rooftop I was on. The ESB on the other hand is a completely different matter. However, that would imply that nearly any photo taken within line of sight in the vicinity of the ESB would have wavy lines. I'll have to check that.
That's a well know effect when people try to shoot from the Empire State Buliding. However, I didn't know how strong the antennas are and that the seemingly are effecting you even if you shoot two blocks away. But it could also be a local WiFi, for example.
Yes, shot with USM lens (Canon EF 28-70 f2.8L USM), but lens set to manual focus. As I understand the problem most other people are seeing is when images are taken at high ISO and AI servo being used. However, this is neither.
Unfortunately, I guess this is also a normal phenomenon for photos taken around the ESB. The level of interference must just be very high. I guess its good thing I didn't unload my 1V.
Out of curiosity (I don't think I'll be unloading my 5D because of this), but is this problem as severe in the other Canon DSLR bodies? Or is it localized to only certain ones?
Here's a shot I posted last month regarding 5D noise - in my case, the absence of...I shoot a lot of low light, high ISO pictures, and I have been thrilled with the 5D. Someone posted recently that the noise pattern you are experiencing was typical of Canon consumer bodies, but I have never seen that in my 10D either, although it had much more 'normal noise' than my 5D.
Shot at 15.0 sec., ISO 400, f11, 28-70L. No post except wh. bal. - I'm in Kansas - I guess that is sufficiently far from the Emp. State bldg.....
