p.1 #1 · Travis Air Show (lots of pics)

My dad and I went to the Travis air show and had a really nice time. Unfortunatly we were to late for the B2 and the new F22. There was some awesome cloud cover to really give a nice background for some of the shots instead of just a boring blue. They had a real neat F15 and Thunderbird demo that we were able to see. Here's some shots of what I was there for. Used my 300D and 70-200f4

The F-16 flying away, with the wing tip vortices intermingled with exhaust heat (#14) is fabulous. Never seen a shot like this. You are correct regarding the clouds, adds a bit of interest to the background.

Thank you, I thought that one was pretty wild as well. This is my first air show with the camera so it was a lot of fun. I was amazed I was able to take 270 pictures that day with only 1 battery.

I live about 30 min east of Sacramento. My dad used to fly when he was younger and is a nut for things like air races/shows so it was fun to go with him. We went to one before when I was a lot younger and I don't remember much. I'm going to be applying to both UCSD and CSUSD, how do you like it down there?

Glad you guys like the pictures, here are a few more from the ground.

My dad really liked how shiny the prop was on this mustang(?) and wanted me to get a picture of it...maybe you guys will like as well hah...

There was a prediction for possible rain, but it ended up being perfect weather and maybe a little hot. This is where we and others ate lunch under the wing in the shade.

Hope I haven't posted up to many. Also any crits from you guys would be appreciated, there's so much knowledge on here I'd love to be apart.

Adam,

GREAT pictures! The only possible improvement would be to slow down the shutter for the prop planes, so you get some prop blur.

Other than that, they're outstanding.

Same thoughts here, 1/250 max shutter speed for planes with props.

And, yes that is a Mustang prop.

Thanks, I didn't even think about that then. I'll most likely have to wait another year for the next one though.

Great images! Kudos to you.

To avoid the "toy airplane" feel for the formation shot with the P51 Mustang, you might want a slightly slower shutter speed, in order to blur the propeller a bit.

(Isn't it crazy how small the mustang is in comparison to the more modern fighters? It looms large in our memory, but it's not that big of an aircraft...)

Yeah the size really is amazing. Not to mention the speed, I bet the jet was feeling like he was crawling where as the mustang was bookin as much as it could.

Thanks for the shutter tip.

I find that 1/500th is slow enough to get a bit of propeller blur for most piston aircraft. Here's an example, this is Gunfighter and Glacier Girl at Oshkosh '05.
