I was sitting here.. thinking (yea.. i know.. sorry).

What if something like this were to exist.

I get $20k and invest in a bunch of lenses.. a large variety.. obviously not everything out there, but a start. I would have the common Nikon and Canon lenses (maybe branch out to bodies, and other systems, hardware etc later)

'Members' could sign up with my service for say $50, and have access to all these lenses. If you want to 'borrow' a lense, you submit a request, and you pay shipping costs. You also need to deposit the cost of the lense + 10% handling fee. This money stays on your account, and you can take it out at any time. When you return the lense, the money becomes available for withdrawl. If any damage is done, that money is deducted from your deposit. If you keep a lense, you loose the entire deposit.

The idea would be to let people see difference lenses, and maybe help with purchases. The system would be funded by the lense markup (if people keep them), membership dues, and fees (late fees, damage fees, etc).

By no means anyhting I plan to do.. just a what if kinda situation.

Comments?

Kind of like a Home Depot for potential photogs, eh? I like the idea, but my suspicion would be the insurance and liability associated with such a venture. Remember, we live in a litigious society, and you know at some point, some thug or punk would try to manipulate the system to their advantage. The membership dues might minimize this, though. Also remember, if the idea turns a profit, you now need to contend with tax ID's, business licenses, etc. Now, on the other hand...if you set it up as a not-for-profit organization where all proceeds to go say...a photography scholarship at NYI or some other sort of study-funded endeavor, then it might be easier and less liability would occur. (You also get certain tax breaks as a non-profit organization). Something like that might also be advertisable in some of the popular photo mags as revenue increases.
