p.1 #1 · DIY: Convert EF-S 10-22 to an EF mount

~~ with your own risk~~

Spotted this at a Taiwanese website.

Original post: http://anitacafe.com/gallery/Object/20050630_EFS10_22/index.html

Basically this is what you need, you can get a EF 24-85 lens and swap the mount (the metal part and the black element) with the 10-22 lens.

Becuse when turning to the 10mm, the rear element extrudes the mount plane,

you need to place a "stopper" at front to prevent the lens from turning all the way to 10mm. The "safe" range is around 10.5mm - 22mm

What's the point? Isn't the image circle too small for non EF-S digital SLRs anyway? Oh wait.. 10D.

There is a potential problem with doing this conversion. These mounts come in different thicknesses so that the lens can be adjusted to specification. How can you be sure that you are getting the same thickness mount fron the donor lens?

And if it's not the same? Try another lens!

Sorry. Couldn't resist that.

I could be wrong but if you read other articles on EFS lens conversions to suit the 10D, D30 and D60, some people have already tried using different Canon lens rear mounts but it would appear that the screw hole positioning was different on some of them.

On the face of it, it appears that the 24-85 mount ring and black section just screw on to the 10-22 which would make this conversion potentially very easy and, to a degree, reversible.

Theoretically, possibly a more sophisticated and safer option than limiting the movement at the front of the lens is to add a spacer under the mount at the back of the lens mount. If successful, this would make the conversion fully reversible. (Other threads on the 18-55 have sometimes had to use spacing rings to stop the 18-55 touching the mirror - this does not seem to apply to all 18-55 lenses, only some)

The problem with this approach is that you will have shifted the focal plane for the lens forward with the introduction of a spacer.
