p.1 #1 · Any truly great Canon lenses?

Hi,

I am getting a Canon EOS-1Ds II soon. I want to start thinking about lenses.

But I want to know which Canon lenses are truly great.

The thing is that ALL Canon lenses are SO good! Canon rocks!!!

But which of the Canon lenses are TRULY great?

Thanks!

P.S. Leica and Zeiss lenses suck big time!!! Avoid them

Oh, and the 200/1.8 is as good as it gets.

I found the 500/4 and 600/4 both very soft ... The 300/2.8 IS L was somewhat better ... The only decent Canon lens was the 200/1.8 L.

If that's your honest opinion, I can't help but think you'll be unhappy shooting Canon ...

Why are you buying the 1DsII?

Welcome to the forum. Wow, I did not know that the 500mm is soft, I happen to like mine. I am glad you like the 300mm better because I think it is considered one of the better lenses Canon has to offer. Too bad, Leica doesn't make a digital body, at least not yet .

I fear that you are going to go the way of a self fulfilling prophecy. If you find the 600L IS and 300L IS too "soft" for your taste, you should buy the upcoming R9 back or a back to fit the the Contax 645 system of H1 system... I know that it might be hard for you to believe, but those soft canon lenses make a lot of nature and sports photographers a relatively comfortable living...
regards,

If the 200/1.8 is as good as it gets, then that glorous 35mm film beating, medium format rivaling,16.6MP sensor is being wasted!!!

Zoom or prime? Wide, mid or long? The 500 f4 L IS is the best that I know of, not cheap though

The 28-90mm F 4-5.6 is pretty good also.

Sorry guys, I don't mean to offend you!

I am sure Canon does more than wonders for the pro. But I am an amateur mainly landscape shooter who is used to super, super sharp stuff. I have shot 4x5 and 8x10 and heck, even bought a Wisner 12x20 camera, which I never used!

I would love the Phase One back for the Contax 645, but $30K? Please!

Even the EOS-1Ds II at $8K is too much. It wouldn't be too much, IF it held its value, but knowing that it will be worth $2K in 2-3 years makes it very expensive.

But still, why am I getting it? Because the sensor is amazing and I have seen the sample shots from it and I am going digital, plain and simple.

And the sample shots were taken with what lens or lenses, please?

Too bad Leica is in the dumps. You've got no choice.

Besides, all of this Leica/Zeiss/etc. glass is hyped up beyond belief. They're two completely different planes of photography. Leica is twice or three times as expensive and more specifically, not digital. Plus, if something is a tiny bit unsharp, you go ahead and click "Sharpen" and you've got perfection at your fingertips.

You can fit Leica R mount lenses onto a 1Ds II with a suitable adapter.

At the price of the Leica R mount lenses, they certainly ought to be better than Canon lenses. A lens that you didn't mention which is good by Canon standards is the 135 f/2 L. You'd probably find it "kind of okay" once it's stopped down a couple of stops.

This thread isn't really about asking for recommendations on any lenses I need. I most likely will get the 24-70/2.8L.

The Zoom I think is not that much worse than the prime lenses and by not changing lenses often, I will reduce the possiblity of getting dust on the sensor, right?

Basically this thread is about curiosity, basically. Just wondering if any Canon lenses are remarkable.

Obviously the 200mm/1.8 was. Shame that they discontinued it, let alone improve it and add IS to it.

Again, sorry if I offened you!

If you are already happy using and have a collection of manual focus Leica and Zeiss lenses, you could always get adapters for them. It seems like that is all the rage these days anyway...

None taken! Again, I am curious about the lenses or lens used for the sample shots you see that impressed you that much to switch to Canon....

sippinsoma - Leica and Zeiss glass is not hyped up. I have taken test shots on Kodak Tech Pan and there is no comparision. Honest!

As for "clicking on sharpening", please! You cannot gain resolution! That is fake! Edge enhancement. Terrible...

This isn't directed at you, but I will never come to understand people that buy expensive dSLRs and then buy non-AF lenses... 1/3 of what you're paying for in these amazing cameras are the metering and focusing systems.

Oh well.

Someone good with post-processing skills can blow darkroom techniques out of the water.

Plus, they are hyped. I've seen the tests and results.
