A friend of mine is bored with her kit lens and I suggested she get a 50mm prime.
The nikkor 50 1.8d wouldn't auto focus on the d60
The nikkor 50 1.4 G would autofocus on the d60 but would be too expensive.
Her budget is around $100.
She's thinking of getting the 50 1.8d using it as a MF lens. Is there any other 50mm lens that would mount on the d60 and be cheaper?

the 50/1.4 AI or AIS would be about the same price as the 50/1.8D with a better manual focus ring and a little bit better performance. sadly nikon cripples the metering of old lenses with it's low end dslrs so she would have to shoot in manual mode or buy a chip to glue on the lens.

thanks I'll check those out - I use canon gear so I have no idea about which lenses would work for her d60
find out if she is ok giving up the auto metering modes when she uses the lenses, because without adding a chip none of the manual focus lenses will allow even aperture priority mode.

That's what I thought too, so (for the person in question) I'd think it's probably not worth the hassle to use manual alternatives over something like a 50/1.8D.

yeah, sadly the only chipped (or autofocus) ~50ish primes for nikon are significantly more expensive than the 50/1.8D. the only ones i can think of are:
sigma 50/1.4 (autofocus)
sigma 30/1.4 (autofocus)
voigtlander 58/1.4 (chipped manual focus)
voigtlander 40/2 (chipped manual focus)
zeiss 50/1.4 (chipped manual focus)
zeiss 50/2 (chipped manual focus)
all are supposed to be quite good lenses, but all are in the same price range if not more expensive than the nikkor 50/1.4G. there are lots of good cheap nikkor AI and AIS lenses but adding the chips can be a pain for many people and adds a bit of cost: http://ongabonga.wordpress.com/2010/06/10/russian-communicator/

A cheaper but still quite nice possibility would be an Olympus OM 50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4. You can get an f/1.8 (get the latest model with made in japan stamped on it) for about $50 or a f/1.4 (get a serial number above a million if you can find one) for about $100. The mount conversion (which you can get from Leitax) with a chip install will run you about $135, however. Still for just a bit more than $200 and significantly less than the other chipped options you can get a very nice lens.

i was ignoring mount conversions because of the extra work, but yeah the OM lenses would be great and much more pleasant to manual focus than any nikon D lens.
The native 35/1.8 is about as good as any 50/1.8 or 1.7 that you can find - costs 200$ (less than 150$ used sometimes) and has a fast USM AF and AE on the D60.
-sometimes the easy/boring answer is the most practical one.
