p.1 #1 · Fuji x100 - remove lens?

Too early obviously - but does anybody out there who knows about this kind of stuff (Paul, Dmitry et al) have any thoughts on this? Dreaming of being able to put on an M-mount of course.

But I am sure there is a million technical reasons this is just, and will forever be, a pipe dream :-)

Study the lens diagram for this camera and understand that there are several (at least 4) lens elements deep inside this camera. Further, look at the size of the final lens element. It is HUGE. Far far larger than the front element. And it is only 5 mm's from the sensor. Trying to remove this lens will result in exactly ONE destroyed X100.

I have a better idea for mounting M-lenses:

Get an M-mount camera.

How about removing the front element from the lens of the X100 and then attaching with some crazy glue the M-mount adapter?

I really don't understand why so many can't get their heads around the fact that it's a fixed lens camera and that's.. awesome. I'm personally tired of 'do it all camera systems'. If this camera lives up to the fuji name and its technology then it really will be a fantastic camera. Look elsewhere for lens versatility period.

Not unlike shoes cameras are not made to fit everyone, they need to be modified!

Isn't the shutter system integrated within the lens?

Yes it is While I am not as against this idea as the rest of the posters here, there are some technical problems. The lacking shutter for the M lenses would be one

Wow. what a bunch of negative answers and unfriendly attitude. What happened to FM? OK, my question might have been technically stupid, but thatīs why I asked. Because I want to know something I donīt know anything about.

An "unfortunately not possible", maybe followed with a with a simple, friendly explanation would be fine. I would have been grateful for my question to have been shot down - in a friendly manner.

Why all the unpleasantries on here all of a sudden? This is a place where people have done unimaginable things and I am always surprised by some peopleīs amazing ability to think outside the box and workmanship in getting it done.

"Get an M8?" Really?
You want a single lens camera? Great for you! I am just asking a question. Why the insults?

Thanks, Akul and rattymouse of giving me a reason it is an impossible endeavour.

Why is "Get an M8" an insult? Its everything you want from the X100. M mount, real rangefinder, way better build, bigger sensor and not that more expensive.

And, there are several M mount camera with 1,5x or smaller sensors with only need an adapter. Sony NEX, Oly Pen, Rioch (doesn't even need an adapter, is M mount camera)

Some time ago I saw a picture from someone who build a 5D mk2 to M mount by removing the mirrorbox and reshaping the body.
If thats possible, building the X100 to M mount should be possible as well. But the 5D mk2 to M mount has some great advantages (video, great sensor, liveview) while there isn't that much advantage from the X100 over an M9 or M8. Especially when there are lots of other camera's witch do the trick.

Basically, if one wants a small APS-C camera with interchangeable lens, there are other choiecs than the Fuji. If you are willing to go without a viewfinder, the Sony NEX is an obvious possibiity, if you are "sold" on a hybrid VF like the Fuji's, a Sony Alpha 33 is there for you. Don't forget that shooting with different lenses than the one the X-100 was designed with would leave you pretty helpless because the cam was not designed for this, and thus will defintely not offer any help for such situations. This will mean not only trouble to "get it done" mechanically, but also with metering, exposure control, EXIF etc...
And, frankly, I don't see what uniqueness you get in return... not yet at least...

I think waiting for a new Sony NEX would be the way to go, before you do anything drastic atleast. A "NEX-7" type camera is what many are interested in, and with Sony now developing electronic viewfinders, some sort of attachable one would be a great addition. It's not an X100, but it's more realistic in many ways... It seems an e-mount Zeiss 24/1.7 is on the way too...

+1..I was also surprised by the tone of the replies.
In a forum where refitting lens mounts, taking apart and re-assembling lenses, shaving mirrors and trying every possible (and sometimes not) configuration all this sarcasm came a bit over the top.

It was just a question
peace
