I want one, but whoa, sticker shock. I'll have to make do with my 35mm f/2 for a little while until my wallet heals from the 16-35mm/85mm 1.4 double whammy it took over the past few months.

Jeez, people. Can you remember the last time Nikon made a lens that was not sharp?
Settle down!
Yes, I most certainly do (the 70-200 VR on FX springs to mind), but that is not the point at all.
These are smallish web images and they don't say anything whatsoever about the lens quality. The guy could have taken these pics through a jar or a lensbaby - his skills are excellent.
High pass / mid tone contrast sharpening affects 'brilliance' and 'clarity' (or whatever you want to call that), and again that's why these images don't provide a good representation of the image quality of the lens.
Nikon Direct. The easiest way to explain it would be "sponsorship", but Nikon does not use that term for any of their pros. I am lucky enough to have a great relationship with them and they give me gear to use, is another way of putting it. I just reciprocate with using it professionally and sharing my impressions of the product.
What really bums me out is the huge delay. Some of us make a living off of Nikon gear and waiting for a lens really REALLY sucks. They did this with the 24mm 1.4 ... which I sold thinking the lens would be delivered based on Amazons delivery date
Try calling Nikon and ask them what is going on ... you know you wont get anywhere when the person answering has a hard time figuring out what you mean by 1.4

If you make a living off on Nikon gear, how did you do it before they even had a 35 1.4?
All I am saying is that I use Nikon gear to make a living ... I have done it without the 35 and I can continue to do it without the 35. Before Nikon I shot with a 5D & 35 1.4 almost 95% of the time and loved that focal length. It is just annoying that they announce something and it takes 2-3 months for them to deliver. Plus when they do deliver, it seems like random shops/areas get them first.
Ben is hardly trolling, he's presenting a logically sound point.
I understand your frustration, but in this case there ain't s*** you can do other than to wait it out. Better wait another few weeks than having to shoot without it at all.
Life is full of waiting. There's a 35mm f/2 if you can't wait, If you absolutely had to have a 35mm f/1.4 it was probably a bit premature to ditch your 5D and 35L.
Nikon probably did announced the new 35 early because of pressure from Zeiss and Samyang, I'd be Sigma will have one before long as well. They had to either announce and make people wait or loose sales.
