Very nice image -- its funny, the first thing I thought when I opened it up was "Where is everybody?". I think it was because you have so much of the shoreline, which would normally be filled with tripods. Its too bad the shoreline isn't more photogenic, rather than what looks like a gravel path. That said, I don't think it detracts from the picture to the point of runing the asthetics. Unlike others, I like some green leaves in my fall shots, gives it more of a transitory feeling. All in all I think you should feel very good about this one-

I have a very similar shot.... from 30 years ago.

Wow that water level is low. This is the first lake - the one by the parking lot? I think the closer lake is over the first hill in your photo.

Back in "the day" you had be one of the first in line long before the gates opened in order to get your personal car down there. Otherwise you had to take the shuttle bus with all the rest of the tourists. If you wanted to shoot the lake and mountains with no one in the shot you had to park your car, sprint to your spot, set up your tripod and get the shot as soon as the sun hit the peaks.

I hiked up and over the pass to Snowmass Lake (was in a LOT better shape then) in the summer - and still fought waist deep snow to get there.

Nice shot and thanks for the memories.

Great light and colour and you`ve been wise to compose out the featureless sky. I have to agree with P2P about the f/g, it`s a little untidy. I used to think how great it would be to live and photograph in North America with so much fantastic scenery but now I`m not so sure. Having to jostle with other photographers would spoil the feeling of wilderness for me.

Wow! Thanks for the update! Man, that is so cool seeing what it looked liked yesterday. Man, so there might be some colors gone by the time I get there next Sunday. But there still should be plenty to shoot. I really like your composition, sure the foreground isn't full of flowers and grasses, but it's a shoreline that's very true to that location. I like how it funnels your eye into the shot. Also, you got a great amount of detail in the shadow area on the left... very cool!

Now, it looks like this spot is a little further down then where the photographers all seem to normally congregate.. is that true?

Thanks again!

Jim

Thanks so much everyone... It was a very quick and fun trip...

Barry... It was very tough to get any shot without people in it and still have some foreground shoreline... I ended up mostly taking portrait orientation shots...

Jim... I will post tonight what it looked like yesterday too (Sep 20)... was busy traveling and then straight back to work this morning... Yesterday morning the clouds rolled in and it was very windy so there was no reflection but got some interest in the sky.... This particular spot was actually earlier than the place where the photographers congregate... I had this brief moment of time where there was only one person to the extreme right of the shoreline so I clicked it (and then had to clone him out)...
