First steps in setting out to find the "Best" alternative glass:

Step 1: Ask you self if you like having money left over at the end of the month. If yes, stop at this point. If no, proceed to step 2

Step 2: Do you like being married? If yes, stop here. If no, proceed to step 3

Step 3: Do you tend to buy things on impulse or while under the influence of alcohol or other mind altering substances, only to wake up the next day full of regret and remorse? If yest stop here. If no, go to step 4

Step 4: Go buy a converted Contax N 17-35/2.8

Step5: Rejoice.

Yep, thanks for the reminder, I have to be very mindful of the exchange rate this time around.

Is there any spcific shop in Tokyo that has the widest (or wider) selection of alt lenses? I usually go to Fujiya and Map for the standard stuff, and rarely buy new (I go to the big Yoda in Shinjuku for accessories though).

I have seen a lot of Leica shops in Ginza though; was too scared to ask the prices :-)

As I will be looking for these in Tokyo, availability may not be a problem (though price very well may be, I dont want to spend vast sums on these).

Yen rate is bad 81 yennies to 1 dollar. Will boost some prices some if you aren't getting paid in yen. Run conversions before buying if not a yen salaryman all I can tell you lol.

If looking for new yodabashi 3rd floor will have all the new stuff you want (just got back from a tokyo trip). This mega store real hard to miss....both the hibaya and JR lines drop you at its front door damn near in akihabara. Zeiss, Voigt are in the same display case. Leica an adjoining case. Oly's are a bit down the section. Picked up a voigtlander 40/2 for Nikon to give it a spin from there. So far I am happy. They have all zeiss looked like....just focused on ones I wanted to try tbh.

For zeiss try...but be wary of.... the 35 F2 . This lens usually is the gateway lens to zeiss addiction. Very nice lens and easy to work with. Seems to be more forgiving of misfocus than the longer options anyway.

2) Contax 35 f1.4
3) Voigtlander 125 APO
4) Leica 100 APO macro

My top 5 affordable glass:

4) Olympus 21 f3.5
5) Contax 50 f1.7

I am really interested in getting a Rokkor 58/1.2, to start with.

I should look for a Canon adapted lens? Any chance it will be readily available and around how much should I expect to pay? And what kind of adapter do I need to use it on a 5DII?

I usually buy my adapters from fotodiox. They have their own site but they also sell on ebay and amazon and the prices are usually better through those sites.

I bought my Mamiya 645 to EOS and Hassy to Nikon adapters from Fotodiox. They are good quality all right but the prices add up to quite a substantial amount, especially now since I am considering ordering quite a number of adapters, to take with me to Tokyo.

Of the (budget priced) ebay sellers, is there any particular seller that can be recommended?

These are the adapters I am looking at now:
Canon FD Lens to Nikon
Contax/Yashica C/Y Lens to Nikon
M42 Screw Mount Lens to Nikon
M42 Screw Mount to Pentax K

BTW, what kind of adapter would I need to use a Minolta Rokkor 58 f1.2 on a Nikon or Canon? is that possible without surgery to the lens?

If not possible to use that lens without modification, wht adapter would I need to use that lens on a cheap Sony alpha (digital SLR) body?

I forgot to add, I am also looking for Leica R to Nikon (if it exists) if not, Leica R to Canon.

the only dslr's that minolta md/mc lenses can be used on with an adapter are 4/3 dslr's (olympus/panasonic). canon, nikon, sony, and pentax all require that you do a mount conversion of the rokkor 58mm f/1.2 if you want to get infinity focus. there are some adapters for some mounts that have glass in them, but they degrade image quality.

i don't believe there are any leica R to nikon adapters, however leitax makes simple high quality mount replacement kits to use leica R lenses on nikon cameras:

Thanks for the info. What kind of adapter do I need to use the Rokinon on say a Oly EP-1?

I just bought a couple of these for a GF-1
http://cgi.ebay.com/Minolta-MD-MC-ROKKOR-lens-Micro-4-3-Adapter-E-P1-E-P2-/320519837443?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item4aa0789703

Jim Buchanan will do a fine conversion of a 58/1.2 Rokkor to EOS, or sell you kit I think. Note that you may still have to do some grinding of the rear lens holder, and the mirror to get to infinity and avoid contact.... depends on the camera.
