You did delete that right
Great shots DJ. Nice to see you have some time with an oldie but goodie when you're having so much fun with your 300 f/2.8 VR!
I'd love to see comparison shots between the Nikon 105 f/2.5 and the Zeiss 100 f/2 ZF... curiosity I guess... It is hard for me to imagine that the photo of this young woman could be improved upon.
Yesterday I got the opportunity to shoot the two lenses back to back. Literally, same body, one after the other. I don't have another shot of the same subjects in the same setting and timeframe, but for what it's worth:
... and of course the focus ring operation is silky smooth.
Having said that, I'm really not sure how much of a total IQ difference there is when you weigh in the fact that one lens is worth about $100 and the other some 20 times that.
Incidentally I need to give props to the handsome gent in those photos who actually let me steal away the Zeiss 100v2 for a quick play... very nice guy and a good tour guide too.
All in all it looks like a great day... hanging out with other photographers and sharing gear. It is also a delight to be with people who aren't afraid to have their photos taken. Most of the people in my life have become accustomed to having their photos taken, but when I'm out and about I don't tend to point my lens in the direction of people I don't know. Occasionally, I'll ask if I might take a photo of someone but not often.
Great day, great shots! This morning I bought a 35 f/2 AI-s for almost a thousand dollars less than the Zeiss. I'm definitely suffering from Nikon Acquisition Syndrome...
Curtis, at least your version of NAS isn't costing you an arm and a leg!
So far on my journey I've picked up these:
Tokina 17mm f3.5 MF
Nikon
35mm 2.0 AIS
50mm F/1.4 MF AIS
55mm F 3.5 Micro AI
100mm f2.8 Manual Focus Series E
105mm f2.5 MF AI
135mm f3.5
200mm f4 AI-S MF
Lensbaby Original
I need to go have a day out with them all before surgery.
Nightowl - We've covered some of the same territory it appears, though I see from your profile that you're mounting them on a D300. I've not used that camera so have no way of knowing how the viewfinder works when shooting manual focus. I know the D700 works beautifully with these lenses.
Sorry to hear about your surgery. Good luck with that!
A little more night shooting with the 105 wide open with lights from cars and stoplight from the intersection behind me reflected off the window where this sign hangs.
Ouch, Troy. Great shot, which will be a fun memory down the road, but geeez, that looks bad. I'm almost afraid to ask, but what did the damage?
BTW, I dug up this thread because I finally took delivery of this lens. There's a lot hype here, and I was wondering if the lens could really be that good??
I've only done some test shots (it just came out of the box), but dayummm. I think I will become a believer! I'll add a real shot or three, when I get them.

I'll be very interested in what you have to say now that you've been shooting with the Zeiss lens at this focal range. I brought the lens with me during a visit last week in the Netherlands but it didn't find a great deal of time on my camera. When it did, I was really pleased with what it gave me. Here's a photo of the captain of a barge that carried a wedding party along a canal in Delft on the way to the reception. Got to love this look...

17 with a heavy foot
And here I thought it was only boys who had a heavy foot at that age. I certainly did my part with perpetuating that truth with sufficient traffic tickets to lose my license not once but twice, the second time for 90 days.
Sorry to hear of your daughter's misfortune. The fact that she allowed you take her photograph suggests she isn't too traumatized by the scar. In this era of piercings and tattoos it isn't easy to know what causes embarrassment and what becomes a badge of honor. I wish her well in her journey recovering from this experience. The old adage, after all, is "live and learn." Perhaps her foot will now lighten a bit when depressing the accelerator pedal...
Curtis, I was not getting dependable focus with the Zeiss, and still can't determine whether it's me or the lens. Zeiss has the lens now, but I should have it back by the end of the week, along with another copy for comparison. Now that I have the Nikkor 105/2.5, and a local buddy has the 105/1.8, there shall be comparisons made soon,
For now, a couple of quick shots from the lens which is the subject of this thread. I just haven't had much time with it yet.
But here's one from the day I got it, along with a 100% crop to show the weird lines I found in the bokeh. Does anyone see stuff like this with this lens? This is the only shot that's shown it so far....
As for the questionable lines in the bokkeh in your first shot, I'm curious what you have your Active D-Lighting set to there? Might be more a function of the camera settings than the lens?
I only use Lightroom, and it's my understanding that it doesn't see any of the ADL information? So I've never done anything to that setting in the menu. Must be at factory default, whatever that is.
I can't comment on the lines but I agree with DJ, this portrait is stunning. I can't imagine any lens doing a better job... Of course, one of the advantages of shooting young folks as you do means generally you'll get creamy skin as we see with this girl. But the eyes leap off the screen, no doubt a tribute, at least in part, to how you were lighting the scene.
I did check a wide open shot taken with this lens out of curiosity and took screen shots at 100% at a couple of locations. Here's the image, which you've seen before posted on this thread.
Here are the crops... I selected them because there is an artifact present in each, at least to my eye. I certainly hadn't noticed this until you brought this subject to our attention. At least with the flower, I don't think what I highlight is a problem.
