Yeah, the good news is that I do see them for sale under $200 pretty regularly so I didn't feel too bad letting it go
i'm just consolidating my lenses so I can purchase more expensive ones
I know what you mean. Three Zeiss lenses were dropped on the Buy and Sell board yesterday and despite the fun I've been having exploring Nikon's venerable manual focus glass, I was tempted, at least until I saw the lens I was most interested in, the f/2 35, had been sold. Frankly, kit building is a lifelong adventure that includes BOTH selling and buying. I certainly never imagined I'd be selling expensive Canon glass I'd accumulated over the years and often bought at very good prices... but I've done just that and will likely do more as I finance my Nikon adventure.
Good luck building your dream kit, though it is hard to imagine there isn't room for this little gem...

I agree with you 100%... my current dream kit is.. 24/1.4 (opted for the Sigma 24/1.8), 50/1.4 (own), 85/1.4D (own), and 135/2DC (pending sale w/ FM member) and i'm sure this "dream kit" will change & change again... haha
For the short time I had the 105 2.5 AI-S i was impressed, so i'll keep it on the list to own again down the road! I think I will invest more in MF lenses when i upgrade to a FX body

Since the only Nikon camera I've owned is the D700, it is the only measure I have of what it is like to shoot with manual focus lenses. Doubtless, the D700 with its bright viewfinder, works beautifully with these lenses. I see you're building your kit with lenses you can carry over once you buy full frame. I did the same when I was building my Canon kit. I never bought a DX lens, despite the fact the 5D hadn't yet appeared on the scene. I didn't even consider Nikon until the D700 appeared. I know the benefit of the cropped sensor when shooting long, but birding has never caught my fancy. Full frame all the way for me.
Have fun JR and remember buying gear is only the beginning... There are photos to take!

Makes me want to kick myself for selling a NICE copy of this lens...
I was kicking myself as well, started selling off some of my faster MF Nikkor's which commanded a higher price, for funding my first DSLR and a few consumer lenses...not really impressed with the quality of the images,I mounted some of my old MF Nikkors....after reviewing the images...my first thought afterward was...OMG what have I done! ....I'm definitely not parting with anymore of my old Nikkors.
I've been posting my night shots on the 50 f/1.2 AI-s thread but I certainly took the 105 f/2.5 AI-s for a spin one night with excellent results. Here is a shot taken in my hometown, through an open window of my car and through the glass door of a local shop around the corner from me that sells Buddhist statuary from the Far East. This was shot wide open at ISO 6400. The low light capacity of the D700 still amazes me.
And here are two more shots, these downtown at night... relying on light from store window and interiors. The first is an importer that specializes in Far Eastern furniture and art pieces. The second is inside a Chinese restaurant down the block taken around closing time.

dgean does some great work. Master of silhouette's.... Check out his photostream on Flickr - it's amazing IMO.
Takes my breath away! Looking at the photostream I encounter a couple of photos he'd submitted some time ago on a thread shot with the 500mm mirrored Nikon lens. Amazing work!
I'm reminded of how inspiring it is to see work from other parts of the world. I'd love to be shooting full time in northern Italy... just won't happen in this lifetime. I have to settle for the San Francisco Bay Area...
