I have read the many threads in this forum about Samyang lenses. Finally I could not hold back anymore and purchased the 85mm. It is becoming now the favorite portrait lens in my bag.
It looks like all but #3 are either out of focus or focused on the wrong thing..... Like the last one, I don't know what is focused. If you look at the leaves to the left it looks like you/the lens front focused a bit

You are right. It is quite hard to focus without an AF-confirm-chip and a less contrasty object. I have ordered a chip and it is on its way. Hope it will ease my focusing efforts.
Yes I use an Ee-S screen, but I have to take off my eye glasses every time I focus. I had cataract operations on both eyes about 4 years ago.
Here are a few images at f/1.4 which are definitely in focus thanks to the "contrasty object"
(my wife Rita) :
Yes I have one. Ordered from Eric in Hongkong, a friend of mine. The chip is working fine. But it is not so easy to have it glued into the precise place to match it exactly with the corresponding contacts on the 5D. What I did is, I placed a Canon EF lens (50mm f/1.4) just next to the Samyang on the table and tried to measure (estimate) the exact location. I was afraid to use super glue to attach it permanently, so I used thin double stick tape for the time being. Then I marked the area where the chip was attached with a thin permanent marker. Until now I did not yet glue it permanently. The AF-confirm chip works fine so far.
I am going to meet Eric personally in Hongkong in two weeks from now. I want to buy at least one more chip and another OM/EOS adapter, too. I have now purchased the Samyang 14mm, too. So I need another chip.
I keep wanting to buy this lens but I find it hard to reconcile the purchase with my other "portrait" lenses: my 50 f/1.4 and 100 f/2. I may just bite the bullet one of these days just for the hell of it. So, let's see more photos to make it more compelling
Is there a reason they can't make this lens autofocus? It seems like such a fine lens optically and so inexpensive. I would gladly pay 2x the current price for an AF lens.

Because the companies frequently have to reverse engineer the AF algorithms of these companies. The R&D in getting AF to function correctly would probably jack the price to much further than 2x its price. Moreover, it's not a guarantee that the camera will function that well, as is the case with many Sigma, Tamron and Tokina lenses.
Also, I bet there are more than enough people on the Alt board that really like the feel of an MF lens and wouldn't want the lens to be AF, especially if it moves the price up by a factor of 2.

I've never heard of AF-deficiencies (and chips needing to be replaced to work with newer bodies) with lenses other than Sigma's. Tamron's 90/2.8 macro reputedly even focuses more accurately than the Canon 100/2.8 USM.
