In the last couple of months I've started experiencing a defect with my 50D. Sometimes when i press the shutter nothing happens. I then press it again, and a picture is captured.
1) This has been a gradual process. I'm unable to replicate this pretty much on any level.
2) It seems to me it happens more often when the camera is in portrait orientation (though not sure).
3) It happens with all my lenses.
4) Has happened while I'm holding in the focus button in Servo mode, has happened when in servo mode but not holding in the button, has happened in one shot focus mode.
5) Believe the shutter has lagged a few times = I hold the shutter button down, nothing happens for a while (1-2 secs.), then the picture is taken.
Has anyone had this happen? Is it a sign of a specific defect? Is there a way to remedy the problem my self?
Needless to say, its pretty darn annoying. I will greatly appreciate any input.
Is it possible that you are accidentally switching the camera to 'timer' mode and you have the CF setup for '2 second timer' & 'no beep countdown'? Other than that, the only other thing I can think of is that you have an intermittent glitch with the shutter button.
If you're certain you are not accidentally switching to 'timer' mode then try this: You say you can't replicate it (on demand) but it eventually will happen if you shoot long enough, right? Try shooting with a remote cord...if you can't get it to 'lag', then it's a pretty sure bet that it's your shutter button.
Another thing to toss out there. Do you have the camera set to not fire unless focus is confirmed? I don't have a 50D, but on my 7D if I have focus confirmation on, my FPS will slow down from time to time, kind of like "lag"
Other bone-headed reasons I've had the shutter not fire are because I'm within MFD of my lens (when I forget to reset the focus limiter to 1.8m on my 100-400L), or when I have the lens switched to MF...
Liquidpics: its not in bulb mode and not on a timer. This has happened over a 2 month period, and i never use those settings.
I will try with tethered shooting and see what happens. Sometimes there can be hundreds of shots between it happening though - It might even only happen in some special circumstances for all i know - like after a period of not shooting for 5 mins.
dwweiche: it also happens when focus is confirmed. I usually shoot only after focus is confirmed (like 95% of the time).
did you try it on manual focus
or if your suspect the 2nd stage of the shutter button is dodgy....
try a remote shutter button and see if theres any difference
my 20D did that right before the shutter button went out, when that happend, it was locked on tracking in AI Servo ... it was 1/2 depressed
my 50D does that when I shoot with a 2x converter on a 70-200 f/2.8
my 50D is slow to focus on a black dog in a dark arena
but the shutter button works just fine outside of these limitations
