p.1 #1 · Print It and Frame It

Greetings guys

In my opinion, the greatest negative impact of the digital photography revolution is that people are no longer printing and framing their images. Instead, their entire catalogue of images remains hidden on external hard drives and/or laptops. Undoubtedly, many of these catalogues are not even backed up sufficiently.

I'm still trying to put my finger on why exactly it is that I prefer printed images over digital images. One thing I know for sure is that I'm not a fan of the "impermanence" of a digital image flashed up onto a monitor. It's there one minute, or should I rather say one second, and gone the next. There really is nothing tangible, lasting, or of substance there. It's simply a series of zeros and ones, that disappears into the ether once a keystroke on a keypad is engaged.

I do acknowledge that the habit of not printing is understandable, because images just look fantastic on a thirty inch backlit cinema display. However, viewing your images in this manner truly limits your audience by not allowing others to appreciate your work as well. In addition, there's still something about a framed image that speaks to people on a deeper level. Framing your work, if done properly, enhances an image and also raises it to a higher standard. A framed piece become a temporal and lasting object. In many cases, it even becomes a family heirloom. Here's a thought: consider printing and professionally framing your favourite shot from the last calendar year. Then, continue to do it on an annual basis. Your family and friends will thank you for it.

If you enjoyed the read, there's much more on my website. Check it out if you're interested.

Peace
Peter

We don't all do that. My walls are full of prints I've done and they are all framed. My brother's offices are also full of them, about 20, framed. another brother is CFO for an insurance co. their office's have about ten of my photo's framed. Nothing smaller than 11x14, to 16x20 and 12x30's. If you have any wall space, I might consider filling it up for you!

I print far more than in the film days, as it is much easier and larger prints are mroe economical than in the old days. I don't frame them, but that is not the point.

+1...I can print to a far greater control of color & exposure for FAR less $$ than a custom print lab used to do years ago. As a consequence, I print far more enlargements (and larger sizes) than I ever used to with film.

Where you might be see diminished printing is in the '1-hour labs' 4x6 prints. People used to shoot a roll of film and goto the drug-store lab and get all the photos (good, bad, or otherwise) printed as 4x6...usually double prints too. However, there are a larger number of people people who are selectively printing and doing enlargements than ever before. Also, a lot of people still print 4x6 images in volume...next time you goto Costco, checkout their photo lab and just see how many 4x6 images they are printing....it's still alot.

With family shots, I've framed many for around the house. With everything else, not so much. And I started asking myself the other day "why shouldn't I?" I mean, it IS one of my hobbies. Why should I not frame more of what I take.

I too love a framed image. I print much more since converting to digital, but different formats. Rarely 4 X 6, almost always 8 X 10 or larger. I completely agree that there is something completely different about viewing a framed image versus a computer display.

Thanks for the reminder, I need to get some files to the printer...

I justified, rationalized going to digital because it would be much more convenient for prints. That was 2004. I only bought my first photo printer in 2008 and as of today have printed maybe 10 shots!

In my films days I printed more but only enlarged a small percentage of those.

It is on my to do list though to print and hang some of my favorites within the next year. It's not that I don't want to print, I just haven't made the time....yet!

Being an IT person though, my images are backed up on 3 different HD's safe and sound...As I knock on wood!!

I bought a printer 2 years ago mainly because I wanted to start sharing my photos with friends and family in the way the OP described. I figured I was more likely to do so when I could conveniently produce large good looking prints (better than say, Costco or Walmart, and I did test this with my own shots) at home, whenever I felt like spending some time on it.

Not wanting to make a decorating decision, I always gave the prints without framing. Looking back this was probably a poor decision as I believe none of my prints ever got framed and displayed. Also, I delivered many in sizes that the typical retail stores don't make frames for, like 13x19. Of course, it could also be that people simply didn't like them . One of my friends did put some up in his garage .

I often gave the prints of what I thought were my best shots, but the funny thing is the only time I ever got a very thankful response was a simple shot of a bunch of the guys from a trip we went on. I gave the prints to someone to distribute to another guy I only knew through him, but when I ran into that other guy at a party he gave me a very sincere and emotional thank you. I think this had something to do with a death shortly after the photo was taken, though the deceased wasn't present on that trip, maybe it was just a reminder of better times or something, I don't know.

Anyway, I realize now there's no real point to what I just wrote . Well, just relaying some personal experiences with giving out prints and feedback I guess . In closing, I will say I stopped giving out prints some time ago, but maybe I should start again.

I think in my use of digital over film I have printed fewer small pictures but far more larger prints 8x10 to 13 x 19. I've also done things with posters and photo based gifts that I would never have considered with film. The comparison I make with film is between my families racks of photo albums and our digital photo frame. In the 5 years our first frame lasted it shared far more of our photos than the albums. In a different way but a positive one for me. I'm considering moving up to the 8x10 or larger digital frame format and look forward to a large format framed, but digital, display.

Well said Peter. I recently printed one of my favourite images at 24x36in and had it framed and mounted in my living room. Now I get so much enjoyment out of the picture, and looking at it every day makes me appreciate it even more. I think I'll take your suggestion and print out a new image every year. Cheers!

This is a subject that really intrigues me. I want to print, Mat and Frame, but I have a fear of the framing aspect of this. Short of taking it to a framer (way to expensive) any one have any solutions to the framing. Can you buy the essentials and put mat/frame together?
