p.1 #1 · Nikon "New Concept" camera is coming

It looks like it may be mirrorless.

Cool, if there there were no moving mirror or shutter hand holding at low speeds would be easier. It's be nice for wedding ceremonies, court rooms, and movie sets.

A mirrorless Nikon body would be very interesting, and might make my GF1 + 20mm f/1.7 lumix obsolete... especially if it's the long-sought digital full-frame rangefinder body.

Also, I hope Nikon starts trying to edge out Thompson/Viper and RED as a large-format, RAW-video capable, interchangable lens professional video platform. I lust for a professionally usable interchangable lens video platform based around existing Nikon F lenses (with AF capabilities while shooting retained, and reliable contrast focus).

A mirror-less body would only be of interest to me if:

Viewfinder was in real-time, was 100% of image camera sensor sees, and was a sharp image in all light conditions. I suspect this will not be the case with a new system. We may need to wait until at least version 3 or 4.

You might be surprised Roy, Panasonic's GH1 viewfinder is already very good. It's 100% and in real time, it was released in 2008.

Well thats a positive comment on 2 out of 3. Can you see anything with extreme sun from behind the camera?

I want a mirror and an optical viewfinder. I'm not a videographer, dammit.

Hmm. I'd like a mirrorless body, but no the EVF that goes with it. I'd take a lot to tear me away from my optical viewfinders

That said, I'm sure this isn't really a DSLR replacement. More of an interchangeable P&S. Never know though - Nikon is due to toss a surprise our way...

No idea on that account, I've not played with one in the bright sun.

EVR's are the suck! My HD camera at work (F900R) has a EVR that was crazy/stupid expensive, like 12 or 15K. It's safe to assume that it's about as good as can be made. And it sucks. I barely trust it for critical focus (and it's all critical in HD) and it has a 2x mag switch and remember, this is only for an image that is 1K x 2K. Even the field monitor is mostly useless and more often than not I find myself dragging along a 20" flatscreen for focusing...

Convienent set-up, right?

When I shoot film cameras (motion), focusing through the viewfinder is never an issue, even with goofy macro shots like I was doing above. The high-end Hollywood HD camera's all have optical viewfinders or everyone gathers around a huge monitor... EVR's are going to have to get a LOT better to replace direct viewing.

Nikon, Japan’s biggest SLR camera maker

I thought that was Canon?

Agree. re. EVF, though the new ones are (IMHO) certainly good enough to use. And I agree with fishfilm; but add that still photographers have been doing the same for years (tethered shooting, I mean, where the art director and others gather around a bog monitor).

Last fiscal year Nikon owned the largest share of SLR sales. Canon was second.

gman—that was the key, was it—"SLRs" (rather than "DSLRs")? Or did you mean DSLRs?

I am just surprised, that's all; I am an all-Nikon guy myself these days but at most events I shoot at, Canons are the most popular. Cheers and thanks

I don't think there is much in the way of new "non digital" SLR sales these days.

Here is the report I saw...

I'm getting sick of people commenting on video threads saying that they don't care. If you don't care, then don't read, and please don't comment. Obviously, other people do care, so butt out.

+1. Nothing wrong with video; a company that places importance upon its development is thinking toward the future. As video resolution and quality continue to improve, I imagine we might stop worrying about the decisive moment and just pluck it out as a frame in an ultra-high-def video sequence.

With all due respect ... I find myself having to agree with lordarka. It reminds me of the time I smugly smirked at all those people buying up those expensive anchors called DSLRs thinking they will forget about film and I will staunchly remain one of the few to whom the masses will flock because I still shot film! I waited .... waited some more and to my surprise I found development options for film on the decline!

Somewhat embellished but think it illustrates the point.

Yes I want my optical viewfinder but I will adapt to whatever comes down the line.
