Does anyone know if there is an adapter for Leica R ROM lenses that can transmit exposure and exif data or perform auto-aperture with Canon bodies via the electronics? I found an adapter called Kipon, but there is no real description of the functions, although addtional copper connections are visible.
You won't get auto-aperture from an R lens, and no adapter I know of that will translate information from an R ROM chip to an EF chip and send it on to the camera. Chipped adapters, however, can be used on any R lens and some are programmable with a single focal length and max aperture.
Thanks for confirming what I thought. I have the R 60 macro with a chipped adapter, and have another chipped Fotodiox adapter sitting here from a previous R 28/2.8 version 1 that I sold.
Tonight I bought a R 28-80/3.5-4.5 from an ebayer in NJ, and may have it by the end of this week. I know it's not the top of the Leica quality list, but hope it will be useful and have some of the positive Leica characteristics. Anyone have any experience with this lens you can share?

ROM chip on the lenses LEICA simply passes the information to the camera about the focal length and wide open aperture. He has no physical and electrical connection with a real aperture of the lens.
I know Contax N lenses can be re-worked with an EOS mount and retain most or all their functionality, including AF. I'm surpised no one makes an adapter that links the Canon contacts to the Leica R ROM contacts for the exif and also auto-aperture closing, similar to the Zeiss ZE/
ZF. I'm not engineer, but it the contacts are there and the power levels can equalized, why not use Leica's engineering? Obviously there must be understanding I'm ignorant of.

leica R lenses don't have motors in them to control aperture. leica R cameras control aperture mechanically rather than electronically – a series of levers from the camera to the lens controls aperture just like nikon cameras. all the ROM does is pass lens id to the camera. you can get this on canon by just chipping your adapter. since canon cameras don't have aperture control levers (they got rid of this when they abandoned FD mount) there is no way for a canon camera to control aperture on a leica R lens.
Ah, okay! It's a little clearer to this Leica newbie!
The 28-70 is supposed to arrive today. In further conversation with the seller (a terrific guy, who I'll plug once the lens arrives satisfactorily), he mentioned the 2X extender will work on the zoom and my 60 macro. (He suggested me skipping the 50/2, since I have the 60/2.8 and will have 50 in the zoom, and to consider the 24/2.8 and/or 90/2 instead.) That was interesting news! So I ordered one for a very cheap price. I'm not much of a tele-guy, but for $120, it's a nice option to play with. I know this isn't supposed to be the top Leica lens, but it has to be better than the 28/2.8 version 1 that I had.
Thanks for the help understanding the ROM situation.
The Leica R 28/2.8 is a Minolta design and a bit overpriced for what it delivers. Other options at 24-25 are more solid, like the Nikkor 28/2.8 AIS or Contax 25/2.8. Sell the 28/2.8 v.1 and save your quarters for the v.2. Worth it...
Splitting this thread might be in order, it is very long lived, but difficult to survey. Sample pictures might be placed in one thread, "R-pictures ", technical questions in another "R questions".If there is agreement, maybe the moderators may perform the split.
I don't think I'd pay the asking prices for the E60 Summilux 50 but it is definitely an optic I could covet.
In that, the Summicron R 50 I use is 9/10 and from what I've seen the E60 is 9.5/10. It looks like it's capable of nearly anything. carstenw wrote:
