I had it happen 2 times, the only way is give it back to canon CS, get back the body first and get back the repaired grip later.

Actually the dail can't be and no need to tighten. This is a design fault that the dial mis-lead people think it can be tighten up with a bigger fingers force as usual houseware design.

I complained to the canon customer service since they charged me the repairing cost and of course, no feedback .....

£41 for the gears seems a bloody rip off. How old is you grip? maybe you could get canon to replace them in warranty (just mention substandard parts on a near $200 item)

I'm also pretty sure that you could hunt around and fins a metal replacement for the nylon one. Its a while since I've seen the inside of the grip but it must be possible.

Ok thanks for looking that up i appreciate it!!! and i will call canon tomorrow and see what they can do but check this out.. http://www.uscamera.com/cg2_1365.htm they sell a replacement for pretty cheap and all i need is the plastic wheel which pops off on the bg-e6 however that replacement part looks like its for the bg-e2, the metal frame is different but i dont need that, just the wheel which im almost positive is the same.. so if all else fails i might just get one of those?

if the plastic gear pops off you might want to hunt around some model shops that do RC cars and stuff as I would bet you could find better. (and it would much cheaper)

Nice work!

What kind of luck you must have to have a gear with the diameter and tooth count to work! I've probably got 1000 small gears and pieces of geared assemblies and not one of them would be the one I need at any given time.

In case it doesn't hold, I've got an off label copy that's as solid as the Canon model and feels like it may have metallic gears. Brand name "Zeik", and it was $69. new.

I personally think it's BS that Canon makes a grip like this and doesn't do anything about it. I mean, for crying out loud, it's over $200 for it. It's been a known issue since it's introduction that the the grip has play in it, and it doesn't surprise me at all that users would try to correct that by trying to tighten it more.

I bought a Zeikos grip for mine, less than $100, and it fits nice and tight. I felt a little bit bad about buying it, I've always used Canon grips prior to this one, but I read about the fit and just couldn't justify spending so much for it.

It doesn't surprise me at all. Canon makes plenty of junk products.

Yeah its quiet ridiculous that we pay 250 more or less for a grip that can get screwed up pretty easy....and the repair by canon isnt cheap! Hopefully my gear will last a while... but i just cant buy a off brand grip for this beautiful body not yet!

I had this problem too. The knob started to rotate freely, no way to detach the grip from the camera.

The only suggested (best) way was to destroy the knob to reach the metal gear inside and then using a flat screwdriver, make it unscrew (the inner gear is metalic, not plastic) The knob SHOULD BE MADE OF METAL INDEED.

Canon made BIG mistake on this design..

- Here is a method to detach the grip without destroying it if you can't or don't want to send the camera+grip to a Canon service center:

Nice find thanks to a member of the forum.
