p.1 #1 · H+R e-session C&C please!

Hello peeps,

This is my first non-workshop post for crit so please take some time if you can to provide some advice so I can improve. It was a lot of fun getting out on my own and shooting after I got past the initial nervousness/numb mind syndrome. A forum member said to "take your time" when I asked for advice... simple but helpful.

The weather broke just enough here in Kansas yesterday to get out and get some shots without freezing our arses off. Sun was pretty harsh as is evident in some of the shots AND I tried out back button focus for the first time on this shoot as well so some shots are softer than intended.

So, how did I do overall...where can I improve? (I have some ideas, would like to hear what you all think)

Thanks for looking!
Jake

I like 2, 4, 6, 12, 13, 14.

I feel these shots are a better representation of the couple rather than where the couple is located. I have a gut feeling that the other shots were taken in the locations they were as they seemed, "edgy or grungy" and you've seen those types of shots work for other people and you thought to give it a whirl. The other shots seem to be focused less on the "cool" location and more on the couple and their interactions.

The ring shot sadly gets lost in the background and it took me a few seconds to realize it was a ring shot and not just a texture cover to an album.

It's a shame 11 is shot from where it is, that has the potential to be a great little shooting spot if you got a little creative with posing/camera angle/location setup.

^^^ Thanks for taking time to look and write a bit.

11 is a tough spot to shoot from, narrow stair rail by the river leading down to nothing, I will for sure give it another go from a different angle.

I picked the "grungy" areas because I like them, like to mix it up. One was the wall to a tattoo parlor that 2 of my friends own and they actually tagged the art on the building.

Thanks again,
Jake

A few observations, all just one pretty new guy's opinion:

1: I like the placement of the ring and the setup, but your depth-of-field is too narrow here. I've been consistently surprised at how high of an aperture I've got to shoot my ring shots (at least f8, often 11 or 16).

I really like the composition in 2 and 6. 12 and 13 are quite pretty as well.

5 seems like one of those "softer than intended" shots. I like the idea of shooting against the yellow van, but the light looks pretty rough there and the hose/pipe on the ground pulls focus for me.

7 is a good idea, but the lines above distract instead of drawing focus to the couple. I'd probably shoot this closer with a wider angle lens and a wider aperture in order to eliminate some of the distractions.

Thank you Paul, I appreciate the feedback.

The ring shot was a last minute shot that I tried to throw something together before they left, it was the best of the bunch. As you mentioned I am sure it would have been better had I shot at a higher aperture.

5 was one that was supposed to be a "fun" shot but the lighting was rough, not many other options for angles so I stuck with it.
7 was one that was on the way walking to another spot, my mind was going 1000 miles per hour.

Hopefully next time I will be able to slow my thoughts down and think things through.

my fav is 14-- It's not often a guys lashes are the subject, I really like it. For number 3, I think I'd prefer a wall with less distraction going on.

Hey Jake,
Overall, a very nice job for your first time out. Looking at these, I think the biggest thing I'm noticing is that the processing could be more polished. However, with that said, most people go way overboard with processing from the get go, so you're in good shape there.

1. Nice macro. I would maybe just move the ring slightly so part of it wasn't covered

2. Interesting composition. Maybe a good opportunity for some OCF on their faces...

3. I think your perspective could've been a little lower, but good job creating DOF. Don't think I didn't notice that.

4. Nice use of OCF. Well balanced. Maybe burn the bottom a little bit?

5. A cool shot that could be better with either the whole car in it or better expressions maybe?

6. Very nice. Maybe crop a bit more off the left side.

7. This is a well composed shot that I think some processing would really make it pop.

8 & 9 feel a bit busy, but you did a great job getting expressions in 9. Seems their warming up to you.

10. Turn his head into her and you've got a real winner her IMO.

11. Good composition. I'd take them even more off center even.

12. Very nice shot and nice moment!

13. Another nice shot. I would've maybe moved them to the opening on the left as to keep them from having tree branches behind them.

14. Another nice shot. The close up really helps give the set variety.

I think it's a GREAT first set. In fact I think it's a great set, period without the "FIRST" qualifier.

A couple of comments:

1. I love how I have to "search" for the ring... I don't know if this was intentional but the similarity of the texture of the tree bark (or is it a stone?) and the ring visually suggests that they were cast from the same material (I'd burn the bottom left corner a little... still leaving separation from the very dark band right next to it, but I'd want it darker)

2. digging it and not minding too much the centered comp. I'd brighten their faces a wee bit in post (or with a reflector @ shooting time)

3. digging it

4. Love the pose, love the wall, hate the bright lit stripe up front. give yourself cropping creative freedom and crop that silly stripe out.... make it a 2:1 crop and you got yourself a kickass shot.

5. Doesn't really work for me. If I really really wanted to try to make it work I'd try cropping this one also as a dramatic wide format... cutting either just above or just below their knees and then again just below the roofline of the truck... I'd then probably play with the hue/sat and maybe contrast and clarity (some of this with an adjustment brush) and see if I can get the truck to pop a bit more. More likely... I'd just trash the shot

6. Would have liked to have seen the right side of the window. Since I'm not seeing it I'd probably crop the shot in to eliminate the left edge too...

7. not feeling it.

8. eeh

9. fun expressions, fun poses, could have been tighter but ultimately for me they don't work due to the harsh light

10. not feeling it. Pose is the least flattering to her of the set, he's lookin' at the birdies, light is harsher than my comments about the shot and that building in the BG isn't really helping much.

11. digging it. Could have been more dramatic if shot from a lower vintage point lifting them up higher than the trees. Dunno if that would have been possible, but I do dig the shot!

12. digging the expressions and the photo overall but something could use a little je ne se quais. I might try it in B/W, or otherwise see if I can make it pop a little more...

13. What hoffer said. Or trim the trees back a little bit in post, shot is worth the 3 minutes of love

14. Digging it.

Hi Jake,

I avoided reading crit above, here's my thoughts:

1 is nice, the foreground being brighter however makes it the focal point immediately versus the ring (foreground left).

2 - similar issue. The b/w here is a bit flat, but they seem under exposed versus the brighter foreground you framed them with - you've set up a tricky shot, because the shadow/highlight range here is too much for the sensor to handle without over exposing parts of them. I would have off camera lit them here.

3 - a bit flat, +contrast/exposure to make them pop a bit!

4 no comments

5 - It looks like he's leading her into the van?

6 - my fav. Would probably punch up the contrast a bit more as well here, but I really like this one.

7 - a sh***y surrounding needs something to make you not care so much that it's so blah. This shot is suffering because of the setting being as much a focal point as the couple. The pipes, wires everywhere...I'd toss it.

8 - no comment

9 frame right I would have stand alone, partially if you could crop tighter on her happy reaction, depending on the rez of the original shot. Nice.

10 another wall shot, but in colour. No big love or hate.

11 Begs for more exposure/contrast again. could be an epic great shot.

12 - has some weird colouring/shadows on the image. PP issues?

13 - like as well.

14 frame right crop doesn't work...centered more would be much better!

Solid set. Your seeing composition. Thats a good thing. Space relation isd good as well. Location was kinda meh. See what your after in way of juxtaposition but the place still lacked.

4 is your best shot. It needs some PP in a bad way. Submit your RAW and let the forum jhave at it. Perhaps it will let you see better what can be done.

Your B&W lack punch. I understand the whole low contrast B&W but this is not it.
Try Spencer Presets. He has what your looking for.

Hope it helps.
