For this, you use a black towel.

I'm having trouble enough understanding the "White towel" method ..........

I sent Chuck an email, but his reply didn't seem to clear things up any more for me ......

It seems like you're adjusting the Fill Light twice, but not the main ??

AB.

http://super.nova.org/DPR/WhiteTowelRatios/

"That runaround can be eliminated completely by the simple expedient of starting with just the fill light on."
:
"For example, lets say we want the fill light at f/5.6 and the key light one stop brighter than fill at f/8:

1. Set camera aperture to f/5.6
2. Raise intensity of fill until the towel starts to clip
3. turn off fill
4. Set camera aperture to f/8
5. Raise intensity of fill until the towel starts to clip
6. Turn both lights on
7. Adjust aperture until clipping disappears
"

First of all, thankyou all that have responded and assisted with my dilemma "White Men Can't expose themselves properly"

@ Oasisbill,
Trust an Aussie to lower the bar ......

@ Littlebike,
You should of seen the highlights on the dunny biscuits

@ dmacmillan
Thank you for considering your post. Yes, I buggered the red channel and I only used a ladder to make sure I was the "Best Man" in the room.

@ chadlh,
I have to admit, all of us had a go at pissing ourselves.

@ MNPNW,
We did start with white girls but as they were the MUAs, we ended up with yellow girls by error. I'm working on that lighting set up now but it's all a bit funky.

@ Todd Warnke,
Yes I agonised over placing a NSFW warning in the title but I wanted real responses instead of , "Sick, cowool, the shit (when it's actually pee). the bomb, etc...) and I also feared that there would be 75,000,000,000,000 views with no responses at all.
Yes, 3 lights and a red light at the door.

@ photomarvin,
cheers and I hope they're white terri toweling gloves you have on your clapping hands...

@ Dennis Dietz,
Glad you had a laugh, yes lighting would be tricky, a combo' broad and short lighting with Rembrandt butterflied on the 255 colour picker!!

@ AHPZuazua,
no worries, I have a drip tray.

@ Gregg Heckler,
Sorry about the lack of DOF, I was shooting long so I didn't get splashed so I got a bit too much compression. MMM disagree (respectfully) on the HDR, the white would end up way too dirty and grey, maybe a bit of fusion??.

@ stuarty,
Yes, I'm surprised I haven't received any help, I'm a bit miffed. I used all the keywords and phrases.
"How do I replicate this shot?"
"Towel"
"Contrasty"
"How do you get the skin so smooth?"
"zone system"
"Soft box"
"The inverse square rule"
and the biggy, "Speedlight"

@ a2rob,
Yes, I know, I though my subjects would be more animated.

@ mike717,
Actually they only had eyes for each other, I had to get the hose on them more than once!

@ shaunmlavery,
well it's the both side of the fence, like the fellas in the picture.

@ Peter Figen,
Who's Larry Craig?

@ KrautFed,
No confusion, our water goes the correct way, hanging to the right.

@ Lance Couture + Alphabug,
No you don't want to know.

@ Hatcher,
Yes, that's why I'm here, the shot was shit house (or piss house, more to the point).

@ butchM,
Hands of approach and levitating towel, how'd he do that with no hands??

@ Alphabug,
You know you could be right, I was distracted on my ladder and put too much attention to filling in the long shadow the fellas were creating.
I'll try your advice/settings on the yellow girls next.

@ Brent Ward,
you'd be crying if you the subjects in the flesh ....

Thanks for your help fellas, I feel like I know it all now. The intraweb is great for learning stuff without trying hard or going to school or mentoring or picking up a book!!!!

First let me say I enjoy a joke at my own expense and am flattered and amused in my own way: that you'd all waste so much of your time doing it and parrot so many to the concepts I mention, most likely with the same level of comprehension as the bird.

As for the example here? Using CAD cleverly avoids the real world problem of matching a full range scene to a camera sensor but apart from the choice of background its the same approach I recommend in my tutorials for white-on-white:

The other funny part you don't know is that I PM'd Ronnie and asked him to chime in on the other thread. In a previous thread suggested I advocated making everyone look white because I happen to think oblique views are more slimming and flattering. But I thought what he said about photographing black men pretty much follows what I did about the facial tones falling where they should when the shadows and highlights are illuminated and exposed to fit the sensor as they were in all his examples, which as I recommend retained detail in the highlights and also carried detail down in into the deepest shadows. As a result the faces in-between where reproduced accurately, just as I said they would be. He also explained that the skin isn't any different and why that lady's forehead in my shot was so shiny; as I suspected, moisturizer.

Happy as always to amuse those I can't edify. It's all good, so Peace on you all

What's the go with your second image, he doesn't have any eyes, got to be a fake???!!!

Sorry, I don't have a parrot but I do have a pidgeon and think he's got your towel. I guess he didn't comprehend the situation as he is a location bird and doesn't understand that to come into my studio he must not eat the towel.

Damn bird (I said), how am I going to correctly expose my work now that I only have my meter, grey card, histogram on my camera/computer monitor, the screens themselves, polaroid back up and my 30+ years shooting stuff. Bloody bird, I'm going to shoot him. Pidgeon pie anyone??

Now I've had a go at your system Chuck, I got my subjects to fully expose themselves and then got them pull back a bit and think of a few prices of things. Is this correct??

If a towel is unavailable, use paper towels or toilet paper at your own risk.

No, you got it all wrong. The guy on the right is pissed off because the urinal is too high and it is splashing. He is comparing his with the lower urinal on the left and he just took a picture of his urinal with 2 inches of himself (for perspective only) in the picture and sent it in to the management. This really happened!

So I guess now we're left with the question of how to photo the Blue Man Group.
