How much heavier? Seriously, even if it is heavier by 100 grams or so, it's no big deal, you've got VR to smooth out any camera shake In any case, it's not exactly a light lens compared to the smaller primes, so I don't think it's such a big deal if it gets a bit heavier. Don't see why it would impact on the optics, all the moderns af-s fast primes have it.

Like the 50/1.4? The 24/1.4?

It's just not necessary, and a large part of me finds VR in general to be overhyped. I'm sure that's in no small part because I've not owned any lenses with it, but I've never found myself wanting it either. It can do great things, yes, but if it adds to the cost of a lens or messes with the optics, keep it out.

Is there really a Nikon lens with a VR and non VR counterpart where the VR version actually has worse IQ?

I wouldn't think that size would be an issue because Nikon is going to build you a big ass lens regardless. That seems to be the trade off with the aspherical elements they use now days.

I just know that I have really enjoyed VR @ 70mm and was able to get shots on a rocking boat that would not have worked otherwise. I do agree VR is a waste below about 70mm range.

One thing I kind of doubt though is that the inclusion of VR into the new 16-35 added to the size of that thing. I speculate they included VR so less people would call Nikon ridiculous for building such a large f4 lens .

85 is defintely a WOW lens. But I think VR would be helpful. Im not sure if any of you have this problem, but when I use flash with anything greater than 50mm in focal lengths, I start seeing shake. I know flash is suppose to freeze action, but with 24-70 @70mm and 85mm I still detect shake at 1/60 ss.

1/60 is cutting it really close for 70-85mm... you have to brace yourself and hold pretty still. 1/100 and faster you'll be more in the safe zone. (at least for me)

sometime between now and 15 years.

I dont want a AF-S version, that means the price will increase dramatically.

Put the camera in manual 1/100 or so and bump up the ISO to get a faster more managable SS speed

Nice. This lens often tempts me, but I don't shoot enough portraits to make it something I have been willing to drop the money on. I did have one person tell me it was his favorite landscape lens - I guess we had different ideas in what we wanted for that application!

I'm not sure how VR would improve this lens. While it might help with camera shake for those that don't want to use a tripod, the movement of the optics for the VR system has to do something to the edge sharpness. While that may not matter to some, I would think it would be a disadvantage on a lens of this caliber. I'd love to have VR on my longer lenses, such as the 300 and 600, but for an 85mm f/1.4 I'm just not convinced on that.

With or without VR, I'd still love to have an 85 f/1.4. Maybe someday...

precisely why I want to see a newer version, hopefully many will upgrade to it and flood the market with the AF-D .... and I can get one for less $$

And once it does you'll complain it's too expensive and won't buy it. If it gets those features it certainly won't be the price it is now.

I think I prefer it like it is. VR will make it heavier and probably larger in diameter, and nano-coating will change its optical characteristics in ways that may be technically better but not necessarily subjectively an improvement. I also like aperture rings on my lenses and don't see what the big deal about AF-S is here.

AF-S and VR took the 105mm macro from 560g to 750g; I'd fear this will be the same and it's currently 550g.

You're right, there really is no way I'd buy an updated 85mm 1.4. The only upgrade I'd be interested in is if they produced a 1.8 that had rounded aperture blades, N coating and VR. Kaching

Definitely not going to happen. It would take away from the 85/1.4, not to mention drive up the price of the 1.8 anyway.

Speculation.

Has anyone ever taken a look at the 18-55 and 55-200 post VR and VR versions. That right there tells me that VR doesn't increase mass. The optical formula is likely the reason the 105 grew in size.

I have also never seen a review--ever--that showed VR degraded optical performance. I have never seen anyone show evidence of VR degrading corner sharpness. I have seen how it can improve it.

Anything above 70mm and I want VR. The lens will be as expensive as shit and huge regardless of VR, might as well keep the masses from finding something to bitch about and we all know if this lens is released without VR, Nikon will be the worst ever until they listen to the real photographers and they happen to want VR!!! Am I right? You know it.

What about those of us who don't want or need VR? Are we not "real" photographers? Did "real" photographers only come into existence in recent years?

I have never once wished I had VR on any lens I have ever used.

lol, the only reason you don't want VR is because 1 you haven't used it before, and don't know how beneficial it can be, and 2, because you don't want any added weight or expense.

VR is nice to have, but on the 85 it would increase cost and weight. We'll see what the magic Nikon fairy brings us later this year.

Real photographers was a joke alluding to how a lot of people on forums think they are the mass market and should be catered to by Nikon, not that it wouldn't be nice.

I don't always need VR, but when it was there and I did need. Hell yeah!

My point still stand apparently. No one is showing me any evidence that VR increases the size or decreases the optics. I am sure price is effected, but when lenses are so expensive, does a $300 or so premium really hurt that bad?

i couldn't even imagine how amazing it would be to use a 85mm f1.4 with VR, but one thing to take into account... you might be able to stabilize the the vibrations from your hands, but you can't stop your subject from moving. chances are, if a new version of this lens popped up on the market i wouldn't get it. but that would mostly due to me being a student making very little money... if i had a way to validate my expenses, chances are i would want to pick up an 85mm VR. however, what would have excited me even more would be a wide angle f1.4 prime with VR *cough*35mm*cough* but maybe i'm alone on that. I couldn't imagine the sort of hand-held, low-light possibilities you could unleash with f1.4 on a wide angle with relatively clean 3200 ISO. The results would be unreal.
