Is the .fir just the firmware file specifically? Getting frustrated with the Canon site and not being able to download anything, including the new manual, etc.

Unsure if this has come up, but there's sound recording issues with C modes - when shooting in Av, Tv, or M and going into C1/2/3 sound recording is fine, but from starting the camera in C, sound isn't recorded but the monitors do appear (and appear to be working). Clicky here for more

Was able to download the new manual by going to Canon's USA website and drilling down the 5D2. Never could successfully download from the firmware site at the beginning of this thread.

Maybe I'm just imagining it, who knows, but I'm liking the 24p look. Played around with it a little yesterday and it's hard to pin-point, but I'd say it adds a unique look to the footage.

what i do find strange though is that they shifted 30 to 29.97 etc. but then why not 24 as 24 but 23.something? aren't movies truly 24.00000000000000000000

23.976 fps is more easily converted to NTSC 29.97 fps. I believe 23.976 fps is a very common frame rate, as "the look" is the same as 24.0 fps, but the math works out better for converting to NTSC (standard def. TV format).

Alan

wouldn't the point of using 24fps mode be to match to movie projection, mix in with 24fps stuff, and 24fps input on TVs?

i get that, i just didn't get the weird value for 24fps since the movie standard i believe is 24.000000000000fps

Great for videographers.... Now, for us still shooters, where is the firmware update the shortens the shutter lag and mirror black out time to match that of the 1Ds?

24fps film needs telecine or conversions (pulldowns etc.) when transferred to NTSC video. 23.976 is ready to go without conversion. When broadcast cameras shoot 24p, they're actually shooting 23.976.

I think they actually run the 24 fps movie at 23.976, then they still have to do 3:2 pulldown for NTSC conversion, but the numbers work out well then...

And yes, this is why the cameras just do 23.976 instead...

The new firmware update has already been pulled due to bugs. Many now have dead cameras and have to send them back to Canon for previous FW install. Canon says new updated version of the 5DII FW will be posted soon.

In the 1950's when NTSC went colour they had to reduce the frame rate by the factor 1000/1001 to avoid interference between chroma and sound channels, this is why the NTSC is now 29.97 and when you do 3:2 pulldown you then end up with 23.97. These are actually the industry standards, not 24 and 30.

Wow...you are right! Just double-checked Canon's website and found this:

Dammit - I updated both my 5D2's. They seem to work OK. I'm not sure that avoiding C modes for video isn't a price I would pay for having 24 and 25 fps though.

The new version works perfectly apart from that one small issue, don't let people scare you with internet rumours

Personally, I'd rather have the ability to change sound recording levels than C mode functions. I'll keep the new firmware until the revised one comes out. I don't want to go backwards.

If it's FUD, it's not my FUD. I certainly won't upgrade until the new FW comes out...
